Wow what a lot of posts to catch up with! Just goes to show how relevant this thread is.

D&DD, yes. I was interested in how Ruth dried her herbs in last week's Wartime Farm. I like old cookery books too, but have nothing near your amazing collection. It's always interesting to see which recipes survive today e.g. honey and lemon for a cold.

Another thing that struck me about Wartime Farm was that the government tried to keep people healthy and boost morale, eg give female aircraft workers a makeup allowance. So people would have felt that they were all in it together.

Just caught up with posts and didn't realise Churchill and the Tories were against rationing in WW2.

I have just seen this game on facebook.

The item on your immediate right is the only item you can use as a weapon in a zombie apocalypse.....what is it?

In my case it's a leopard print cushion...guess I am going to have to hold them down and smother them with it lol

Is anyone else going to play?

In my case it's my ever present jack Russell, Daisy. She's only 18 months and would probably lick the, all to death!!!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

PrincessX87, check the qualification dates for Christmas supermarket savings. With Tesco, for example, you have to top up your Christmas savings by this Thursday to be eligible for the bonus. If you top up by the relevant date, the vouchers come within a month so you don't actually have to wait until Christmas

It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Hi to all on the forum

Today OH has fitted 2 new shelves to kitchen cupboards, as for the past 3 weeks i have had 3 wine boxes with dried and tinned goods sitting in spare room, so he has finally put 2 shelves in kitchen units. I must wait till tomorrow to put goods away as he has glued a few spacers to the backs of the shelves to prevent the shelf from bending ( not that i overfill them, but just to be on the safe side.

Ordered and recieved a campingaz bistro stove incase the power goes off in the next couple of months, I havent ordered any gas canisters yet as hoping someone on the form can help me, they say only to use CP250 canisters and that these can be disconnected from the appliance even when not empty.

Is it possible to use other brands of gas in the campingaz bistro cooker ? ( canisters of butane ) can other brands also be disconnected from stove?

I have noticed that the CP250 are more expensive than 4 canisters of butane gas for example £5.24 for 4 ( £1.31 ) for other butane canisters or even larger quantitys are cheaper

Any advice would be great :)

    These from Amazon.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0057XHOKY/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00

28 canisters for £26.99 with free delivery.

My brother bought these for CP250 stove, they work fine.
Will be getting some myself for my stove.

Thanks for that, I know they say only use CP250 canisters i suppose they only want you to use there canisters but they are more expensive to just normal butaine canisters.

If the canisters in the amaz*n link work in the campingaz stove, without issues it will make it a much cheaper alternative

Just be careful using cheap gas cannisters, the fit of the ring into the valve setting isn't as good as branded ones., Most of the time they're fine but every so often the valve doesn't seal properly and you'll get leakage. So it's even more important to change the cannister outside rather than inside your tent. Also remember that the bistro type stoves are not meant for using indoors. They're not really recommended for cooking inside a tent either, come to think of it, but the ventilation in a tent is a tad better than in the kitchen.

Well aware of the ventilation aspect, but again perhaps some onthe forum are not , and always best to think safety first

I just happened to be on this thread whilst listening to the Radio 4 news and am so gobsmacked at what I've just heard that I'm not sure which thread to put it on..

Apparently the Govt. are blaming allotment holders who grow their own potatoes for causing the potato shortage. It seems we allotment growers are responsible for spreading the same type of blight that caused the Irish Potato Famine. They recommend that everybody buys potatoes from farm shops/supermarkets rather than growing their own.
    How does that work then???!!!!!
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at Ca-moron's stupidity...

I was so interested in this I went and looked it up in the news, here.

And tbh, I'm on the side of the Goverment here, up to a point. Even on my allotment site where we're pretty clued up about blight and have a few rules about what to do when it arrives we've still got numpty plot holders that don't cut down the shaws at the first sign of blight as per the rules, giving it a chance to completely take hold. And when they do eventually comply what do they do with the shaws? Dump them on the compost heaps instead of burning them. Then they don't clear their potato beds properly and there are dozens of disease carrying volunteer plants the next year, or they lift their spuds and chuck all the diseased ones in the compost bin again. And don't get me onto the plot holders that use supermarket potatoes instead of growing proper disease free seed spuds, or even worse using potatoes from their own disease ridden crops the following year. And then you get the folk that compost their potato peelings too....

And this is on one allotment site with tough rules about potato crops and diseases, you understand, so gawd knows what some sites/home gardeners get up to re disease control in the ground and disposal of diseased material. So if the Potato Council is reporting that home growers are responsible for a disproportional level of disease spread when it comes to blight, I'm inclined to belive them.

(I used to work for the Scottish Dept of Agriculture btw, in the seed potato scheme. I used to be a field inspector for disease levels in potato crops. Which is one reason our allotment site is red hot on blight control, I wrote most of the disease control rules. ;) )

  • Please be careful of cheap camping gas containers, one blew on site in the summer and sent the cooker 16 feet away!
    Very loud bang as well.
