I downloaded a load of books including that one but it is annoying that I cannot seemingly burn them or move them to a spare hard drive so eventually my laptop will be too full or if it fails they will be lost...anyone know if there is a way around this problem?
It is awful to lose a free book but if you have paid for it even worse.Ha ha, I did that for my DH, trouble was by the time he got to hossy the trouser bit didn't fit
Oh my was I a bad wife !!
Mum did not originally have anything for a hospital stay but I soon took items in but often they had something suitable. I will probably have a hospital stay some time in the future and was in a similar postion but now have two pairs of PJ's, a Dressing Gown but I could get away with T-shirts and lounge type trousers. I have no friends or family so no one to bring me any spare items in anyhow. So eventually I would run out of items anyhow...oldtractor wrote: »I think the S has HTF. Food prices are set to rocket.

Pops have you downloaded adobe acrobat? It is a PDF file reader and free. Some books are uploaded in PDF because it takes less room.

Hi,
This is just thinking allowed really. The talk of funeral planning came at an odd time. What it is (I hope I'm going to put this over well) I don't know if any of you are aware but November is a sort of Will Aid month. Not sure if thats the right term but you get the idea.
I expect I've seen it on the main site. The idea being is that solicitors taking part will do a will for you for suggested fee with money going to charity.
I mentioned it to OH and he seemed to go for it. We are not married but share mortgage and bank account. Our savings are in two seperate ISA's as they need to be but its our money. Well this will obviously lead to no end of bother at a time when you could really do without
I've had a look into it and it appears we would have a Pair of Mirror Wills. I leave everything to him and him to me. Possibly when we are both gone whats left, house included to charity.
Thats our general idea anyway. I think I just need the push to actually go for it and get it done.
Its true what they say, its scary making a will, but this seems like a good opportunity.
The suggested cost of these mirror wills, if its done under Will Aid is £135.00 which I imagine is very reasonable.
Don't want to offend anyone with talk like this, its the last thing I want to think about.0 -

Not offended.
Mum and myself did mirror wills.Simple we thought as there is little if any family and her saving were virtually nothing. However, it has caused problems and I wish now Mum had split it and given half to her brother and half to me.
Now when I come into her savings some help I receive will stop and I may not be able to reapply for it as changes come in and most of Mum's savings will be spent within 6-8 months doing normal daily living costs not luxuries...so do get advice and be sure that your savings are safeguarded because as we live longer you don't want to find yourself poor as I have found myself...
It seems if you save you are penalised....but then again if you cannot save you can get stung so I'm not sure there is an answer, it is complicated."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

pops once you have spent a proportion of the money you will be under the threshold and still have a good cushion for your later years - meant to say this before. You are allowed some savings though Im not sure how much. this means you will have money for emergencies and to spread out to make life easier - hope this helps.
I noticed in my quick visit to Mr T today that prices are shooting up, thank goodness for my de-hydrator, am going to make good use of it so my freezers are not full of fruit and veg then if necessary I can switch off one freezer and save the money I use to run it.
I really do think my prepping is saving me stress as I never run out of things anymore and when I use something I top it up next chance I get. Have lots of cheese sauces and custard also picked up a few 24p cake mixes. If all else fails I can make pasta and cheese sauce with a little meat in and follow it up with cake and custard. I really do despair how people are going to cope soon. Dd has jumped on board and is stocking up mainly because she would rather spend quality time with DGs than running to the shops but whatever the reason it makes me happy.Clearing the junk to travel light

lol at dippypud you're naughty!
morning all - thanks to all for the kind words and thoughts they really are much appreciated
likewise going out to all those with loved ones (including furry ones) who need extra care and attention at the moment.
it's a happy release really in my situation: my aunt had very advanced breast cancer diagnosed just under 2 years ago and also has been in a care home as she had severe dementia which we couldnt deal with on our own as a family in the past year. its been very sad to see a strong woman who has always been in my life deteriorate into someone we dont recognise. she gave me the deposit to help me buy my first property and was always very money saving until the dementia surfaced.
talking of lock and lock boxes, when her home was cleared out after she went into care, there were enough lock and lock boxes found there for each of the posts in this thread to be kept it one - her bro and sis cleaned them and took them a few at a time to the local charity shops so anyone from here in the croydon area who has bought a L&L from a charity shop in the past year may have a weird connection with me!
I an full of cold and meant to be going to a work do tonight but with feeling rough and the news of my aunt I think I may send my apologies.
have a good day everyone, even the haters - keep up the good work xx
ps apologies to fuddle about the undertaker comment I really didnt mean it as an instruction for all or to freak anyone out, it was just a thought that popped in my head that its something I want to consider before the event and not whilst in a emotive state having to make quick decisions - apologies again x
I know thinking about the undertaker is hard. But it is a relevant part of prepping and one of those things that we use if we want to... Thinking about wills as prompted by the winter thread and undertakers on here has prompted some useful conversations at home with DS1 and at work with my recently married colleague.Wondercollie your storeroom sounds lovely and I had to laugh about the mouse being in a diabetic coma
Gooood morning all happy to report Rosiedog hasn't left me presents of any sort of yukkiness this morning I slept on the couch with her just in case..
I'll have a rummage through some of my weirder cookery books today and see what tea recipes I can come up with seeing as I'll be taste testing! I have a few from the turn of the century and before and I also have some like culpeppers homeopathy, james wong..I'm bound to find some interesting stuff and I'm so tired from all the decluttering and cleaning I really need a day just sat on my bum
My current dehydrator is el cheapo from tchibo one and has been really great I bought leather trays from the states for it but use easyleave from lakelands too sometimes.
I am upgrading to a scally though as the amount I grow and dry its now become worthwhile getting one and my freezer situation is getting rather ridiculous
Alison I'm a hider too its great for sneaking stuff in isn't it lol
Right off to dust down some recipe books then
Have a great day all XXX
ps I pre-ordered Cockneys vs Zombies in the end..couldn't resist
Love the combo of culpepper and james wongI know it's the same topic but they just seem at different ends of the herbal remedy spectrum.
re tea making - one of my favourite books is All Good Things Around Us, by Pamela Michael. It has over 20 recipes for tea including Bergamot, Clover, Comfrey, Elderflower (disgusting stuff!!), Gorse buds, Ivy….. and recipes for, jams, jellies, wine, unusual things like Pickled Ash keys and how to make walking sticks, shampoo and cleaning products.
One of the recipes I tried was Hawthorn blossom syrup which was supposed to be a diluted drink but my kids loved it as an ice cream sauce. I made some of the wines too, coltsfoot wine is really lovely but some of these flowers became very rare in the 80’s so I’m not sure what’s still available
There’s a review of the book at http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3750 although she only lists the rose recipes.
Well worth acquiring a copy if you find one (mine is the book club edition)
Yay, another elderflower hater! My parents had an elderflower tree in the garden of old house, right outside my bedroom window. Yuck! Elderberry wine I believe tastes quite different though, so I guess I'll let the elderflowers live.

I am going to revise my will together with DH using a solicitor working with Will Aid. After I shall let you know how it was, if anyone is interested. For me having a will is very important, I want the fruits of my labour to go to DH if I go first, and to my children. I do not want any of it to fall in the claws of the Italian contingent, they can all go to hell for all I care!
DH has a will that needs modifying because it was made when the twins were very young and contains stuff about caring for them etc, so no longer relevant. And he also needs to remove a couple of rogue names, who at he time were only young kids (cousins' kids) who really do not need anything as the fathers are now better off.
Horrid stuff to deal with but necessary, unfortunately. Having said that, I haven't had the nerve to organise and pay for my funeral. Can't face it yet. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I'm going under a tree in a woodland setting, preferably in a cardboard box or wrapped in a sheet. He who knows says it should be a holly or a hawthorn to go with my nature. I reckon that if I grow a decent tree I'll have done at least one good thing in my time!!!!! I have always felt that perhaps dying will be the last big adventure of my life!!! This is just my personal take on things and I hope I haven't offended anyones sensibilities with it!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0
