Thank you, Linda32. Good to know that I can freeze veg without blanching them first.

bornblonde, lovely idea- there is only me and OH at home but I can still get a pack of cards ready for if there is a power cut.

Good to know that I am not the only one who has/had a humming fridge!

Hey Katholicos, haven't seen you for a while, how are you? You used to be quite a regular on the toughies threads - do you still read?
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Vanoonoo I just read your sad news re. your aunt, I am so sorry for your loss.

BB I can't wait for spring to come and camp at your place! DH and I have been seriously considering learning archery so it would be great for that, too!

I have a question: I want to buy some container to stock bulk grains, thinking of 20-25 Kg of rice, spelt and also flour, but not sure about the plastic boxes that you can normally get on the high street, do they spoil the food by giving our plastic fumes? Are there food grade containers available? Thank you for any help.

I would use metal containers because mice can get into plastic too easily. I actually have 2 metal file boxes that I keep my rice and pasta in

I was studying OH's pyjamas - as you do - earlier. He wears a scruffy old t shirt and a pair of shorts to bed, and I was thinking that if he had to suddenly go into hospital I'd be ashamed to visit him dressed like that! So I think I will purchase him some new ones - I may put a pair in a bag with other essentials to grab if it were necessary.

Ha ha, I did that for my DH, trouble was by the time he got to hossy the trouser bit didn't fit :o

Oh my was I a bad wife !!

    good idea!

Caterina - I was looking on amaz0n and the food grade plastic buckets that lots of peeps in the US use, are available new and unused from home brewing type places but I was talking about these with my husband and I reckon local restaurants would have some, probably curry places, using yog and ghee? worth begging? however I agree that the whole lot would probably be best kept in metal as long as no gaps to wriggle thru.

I think with any level of storage, checking and rotating is important for damage limitation. use what we store and store what we use etc.

On Domesday preppers a guy on there stored his rice in plastic juice bottles which he then stacked up lay on their sides. Do you think mice would be able to get a grip on them to nibble through? It also would insulate the walls I think.

Not feeling to good at the mo so think I will retire to the couch while OH has a snooze and study the inside of my eyelids - hope im not getting the lurhy which seems to be rife round here.

    Just had a thought!:p

I remember my grandma used to get us kids to pick red clover. She used to dry them and make tea, and I think it was to assist "ladies of a certain age". Will have to look it up when I'm not between weeding and feeding us.

I read your post, visited the link and then hunted out my Thermos Food Flask which was buried in the cupboard. I too didn't have any pudding rice in the house (as per the lady in the recipe) but did have lots of Risotto rice in (as per lady in recipe) so I made this. I ground in some fresh nutmeg before sealing it in and it will be pudding for him after his dinner tonight. He loves rice pudding! He's gonna laugh when I tell him its been cooking in the food flask, but he's used to my thermal cooking as I make lots and lots in my Magic Cooker (saved a fortune on electric already! its a Godsend) and also make lots of casseroles in my Haybox.

Can't wait to try the Thermos Flask Rice Pudding at 6pm :D
