I use Basmati rice since I discovered my dil uses it for rice pudding. It has the advantage of cooking a little quicker than some other rice. It would not matter how long you left in the thermos because you know it won't burn.

Like me last night, tired and about to go to bed. I read Noo's post about finding the undertaker's number and I freaked... oh no, I don't agree with that, I'm scared, it's depressing etc etc but I hoped I had put it over in a nice way... in a way that got my (tired!! irrational!!) point across without upsetting Noo or the other posters.
I have a couple of friends who are/were undertakers and have heard tales of major family arguments over funeral arrangements. I understand everyone's reaction is different and there is no one solution for everyone, but I'd rather it was clear what my wishes are and that my estate wasn't going to be ripped off for a stupidly large amount of money.
Your post didn't upset me, and I hope mine didn't add to your distress.
We're all just a username, we're all just a persona but manners and politeness are a must ;)

Here I disagree with you, not about the manners and politeness, I agree these are essential. Though there may be some sock puppet personas, there are real people behind every screen name or net nym, we may choose to keep some aspects of our lives off the 'net but we are all real people - unless Big Blue and its brethren have started posting in fora (a breakthrough that may happen but hopefully not for some time)

I think the S has HTF. Food prices are set to rocket.

Is there a new article about it? I've not caught up with the news yet.

Aw, I didn't mean anything negative when I said 'we're all just a screen name'. I know we all have feelings, there's some of us who strike up real friendships behind the scenes, some of us have even met. :) I was just stating that on forums there are many people who are not 'themselves' and choose to be a different persona for whatever reason. We never know really so I like to just keep an open mind and try to be nice to everyone.

On Domesday preppers a guy on there stored his rice in plastic juice bottles which he then stacked up lay on their sides. Do you think mice would be able to get a grip on them to nibble through? It also would insulate the walls I think.

In a word, yes, I'm afraid so! Mice can & will nibble through almost anything to get at food. The only things that will stop them completely are metal & glass. We have, and always have had, house mice, town mice, country mice and all their sisters, cousins & aunts living here on the edge between town & country, in an elderly & leaky house, despite three cats and some excellent hunting chickens who catch & eat mice more or less whole, though the bantams have a bit of trouble with that.

That said, I keep my stocks of rice & large sack of oats in an old disconnected chest freezer out in the garage & haven't had any problems, so far; I think the insulation is so thick the mice can't smell the food inside.

I have just caught up with the posts..good job I can speed read! I laughed at the mouse with the diabetic coma and the phrase ''counting the cous cous'', that would make a great tshirt slogan for preppers or you could use it as a secret password.

Had a bit of a strange mixed day today but at least my communications seem to be working again..having an internet that is on and off and phones that don't work makes you feel isolated from the world and what it might be up to. Such a lot seems to be happening all at once, its a full time job keeping up with the news here.

Talking about being up to something, the Greek authorities decided to test the Civilian Danger Alert system throughout the whole country this morning. Besides the fact that I didn't know we had one (and I have lived here 19 years and usually miss nothing!) we are supposed to have shelters and no one knows where they are.

I swear I knew the alarms and church bells were going to be sounded at 11am this morning....but I forgot and was sitting there sipping my much needed cappuchino (3 euros worth, but I did get a free glass of water)....when they started sounding the sirens like an air raid alarm. It was really not impressive, they were too quiet and were drowned out by the traffic and a group of very noisy school children who were laughing and singing! A couple of ancient tourists looked up at the sky, presumably for a long lost air raid but that was it. The village would have been much noiser (and more fun) with all the church bells going crazy and the odd shot gun for good measure. I was disappointed I was in town for it.

Went shopping and pleased to see some of the prices of basics are coming down. I asked the lad on the fruit counter how much his ripe bananas were as I HATE the green crunchy ones the Greeks seem to like. They were half price, I bought them all...much to his pleasure as he said he would get praise for selling them so quickly. I have now convinced him to save me them for me every week..its a win,win situation!

At the moment so much is happening here that I could worry about I have decided to be prepared but not be worried by ANY of it. Why spend my time in this lovely place worrying what the future may bring. Turkey/Syria is kicking off big style, the negotiations for the bailout are breaking into arguments, the health service is on hold for now and the heating oil and wood are at ridiculous prices...but worrying will not help me at all and will make it more stressful.

So tonight I am going to do the sensible thing and go out to watch an Albanian Elvis go through the hip wriggling to about thirty songs, drink soda water and lemon (me, not him!) and generally have a great time with all my friends around the swimming pool bar. Sorted!

I am helping out at the gym tomorrow morning till late afternoon so will not be back on here till then. I help out one morning a week in return for my yearly membership and the same for my OH. When he is over the chest infection he has to start at the gym to try and strengthen his back.

Off to make some leek soup , have a lovely evening one and all xxxxx

Sorry Fuddle, I presumed you hadn't meant it in a negative way. Blame the fact that I'm an old pedant.

    Interesting website 2T

I read some of the other articles. Somewhat excitable, not to say tin foil hat, but at the same time they chime with what Ambrose Evans Pritchard has been writing in the Telegraph - I do find him very clued up and he always has an interesting perspective. Except that he thinks that the powers that be are trying very hard to keep the government from falling
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • Afternoon all, I feel as grey as the weather today and flat as a pancake.

NUATHA - You are right we are all real people and although there is a degree of anonymity in having a username it is wrong to use that as an opportunity to spread dissent and discord. This thread is about helping one another by sharing ideas and knowledge and the cameraderie here is heart warming, it helps make a fairly bleak world a warmer place.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to feel bruised by some of the posts that appear from time to time, I only know I personally would never purposely aim to be rude and nasty to anyone for any reason. I'm however only human and I wouldn't expect my posts to be universally acceptable to everyone, we are all individuals with our own ideas and experiences. I find myself glad we have an ignore button to use.

I hope that your OH is feeling very much better now and well on the way to coming home again. The deer have so far not been able to work out how to get the rest of the pansy flowers so we have a bit of colour back in the garden Hooray!!! Cheers Lyn and a very soggy lurcher.

I would use metal containers because mice can get into plastic too easily. I actually have 2 metal file boxes that I keep my rice and pasta in
That is a problem I don't have to contend with at the moment, with my two ginormous cats! May they live a long and healthy life but when they will be gone it is a good thing to take into considerarion, thank you butterfly Brain!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
