Wish me luck people, Im going out today, foraging in cs's and Mr M possibly a run round B&M. Got my cammo gear ready and my para cord - well its a really rough area Im going to and I dont have a tracksuit or fake tan so I will have to blend into the background.
I am hoping to get OH to stop near an apple tree thats growing on a long defunct railway line but the only parking is in a difficult place, still going to try though cos I see them every week when we drive past and they are taunting me
I think we had a visit from a field mouse this week as there was a little trail of black rice on the windowsill and things had been moved. I was sure I left an acorn on there but that seems to have gone. I dont mind field mice as they just seem to nip in and out again - but the others  only had them once due to very dirty neighbours moving out - I hope I never have them again, I was out of my mind by the time they'd gone.Clearing the junk to travel light

I remember writing, I think it was on the winter prep thread, 'yeah! Mrs_Doom has come out to play'. Whether it is right or wrong I sometimes think you're winding us up. I like that because it brings a sense of humour to proceedings... who doesn't like a laugh!? If you're not winding us up then show us yer bunker
Whether you have 2, 3, 4+ personas it doesn't bother me. Play along, join in, have a discussion but be nice about it.
Like me last night, tired and about to go to bed. I read Noo's post about finding the undertaker's number and I freaked... oh no, I don't agree with that, I'm scared, it's depressing etc etc but I hoped I had put it over in a nice way... in a way that got my (tired!! irrational!!) point across without upsetting Noo or the other posters. re tea making - one of my favourite books is All Good Things Around Us, by Pamela Michael. It has over 20 recipes for tea including Bergamot, Clover, Comfrey, Elderflower (disgusting stuff!!), Gorse buds, Ivy….. and recipes for, jams, jellies, wine, unusual things like Pickled Ash keys and how to make walking sticks, shampoo and cleaning products.
One of the recipes I tried was Hawthorn blossom syrup which was supposed to be a diluted drink but my kids loved it as an ice cream sauce. I made some of the wines too, coltsfoot wine is really lovely but some of these flowers became very rare in the 80’s so I’m not sure what’s still available
There’s a review of the book at http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3750 although she only lists the rose recipes.
Well worth acquiring a copy if you find one (mine is the book club edition)... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Thank you for your advice, GreyQueen- I am planning to grow broad beans next year, and it's good to know that they don't need to be blanched first before freezing.
Hi hummingfridgelove the user name, they do make a noise.
Just wanted to add that we have an allotment so we freeze alot of veg. I never blanch anything. Simply wash and chop to the sizes you want and pop into a freezer bag. You don't need to open freeze or anything like that. If you get extras you can add the raw ones to the frozen ones, they don't need a seperate bag.

I thought this was interesting. It could be done in a steamer whilst something else is cooking below or on one of those outdoor stoves.
You can use any tin can to make bread either in the oven or steamer. Years ago I made tomato bread using the washed cans from some tomatoes I made dinner with. I cooked it in the oven and used a tin opener on the bottom to get the loaf out.0 -
D & DD glad Rosiedog is on the mend today, I have also been known to spend the night on the sofa with our hound when he's been ill, hope you got enough sleep.
ROSIEBEN - I have that book too, and it's a very useful one. I have a lovely old book called 'A Country Cup' by Wilma Paterson which is a specific for country drinks made from wild plants and herbs. The Blackberry tea was sweetened with honey and used for treating sore throats and thrush (new to me) it also says you can use the fresh leaves to make the tea, which could be the easier option.
VANOONOO - So sorry to hear about your Aunt, am thinking of you.
MRS.DOOM - I appologise if my reply came across as snappy, I also think there is a place for all posters and opinions here.
Have a good day all, Lyn.0 -
Hi all
Ginny I have been a bit over excited:D but i am trying to talk about something other than dehydrated veg, but its blooming difficult, colleagues are starting to look at me a bit funny (but maybe they always look at me a bit funny) hope your shoping jaunt is fun.
I think I may have lost my bread mojo (so if you have it can I get it back, pretty please) as all recent loaves have been rubbish, so thanks for recipe Mrs LW ill give it a go (and hope the lurcher is better).
Dippy hope your feeling better, and cuddles for Noo.
Welcome back sunshine and a big prepping hello to all our new peeps lovely to have you aboard.
D&DD hope your house is a bit calmer and you can have a relaxing cuppa and count tins of veg.
Right i better go and do some work, catch you all soon

As a long-term largely, incapacitated person, i consider it prudent to my circumstances to 'stock' up on as much as i can, of what we eat/drink.
Poor health reasons aside, rising inflation, natural or, erm, unnatural events and disasters seem reason enough for any sensible, even slightly forward thinking individual, to store what can be afforded and accommodated and is required for ones (families) use and sustainance.
I don't for one minute think that anyone here is remotely fearful about scenes from 'walking dead' becoming an actuality, rather zombies have been mentioned in a merely self-mocking tone...and show, if anything, that even in difficult times and even more difficult personal circumstances, humour, will out.
As with a lot of things, there is no right way, no wrong way, just our own way, of doing things.
And that is as it should be.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Well... I can't be assed with schoolgirl stuff - we're supposed to be grownups in here. Some of us are, some of us sadly are not. As my mum used to say
"if you cant be nice, be quiet"
Re blackberry leaf tea, they sometimes say it can be used for sore throats - because its from a fruit bush - but I have tried it in the far distant past and it didn't work at all. I think it would be a good idea mixing it with black tea though. Isn't it sad how all these old secrets are being lost? Times change and we might well need them one day. Soon!0 -
WLL I'm thinking of getting one - let me know how you're getting on with please?0
