PP I'll have a play and see if I can work out a method of re heating those rice pouches not in the microwave, I'm wondering if they would sit in the top of my double boiler saucepan and re heat there just as well. It might take longer than 2 minutes though. I'll put the results on here if and when I find a method that works, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

I have just returned from South Korea, I didn't notice any
. All they ever say about British food is "fish and chips". The South Koreans eat a lot of fermented food like kimchee (fermented cabbage with chilli). It was this that would get them Through their very harsh winters - at this time of year they traditionally make big stoneware jars of the stuff. It is oddly addictive.
Mm spam and kimchee, to get you through any SHTF situation :rotfl:
Our old neighbour was a church youth leader with strong ties with Korea. His Korean friends & their youth group used to come over regularly & stay with families all up & down our road. Now about 60% of us are completely addicted to Kimchi and the greengrocery stalls on the local market carry mooli etc. just about all year round so we can make it! Have to say, it's a brilliant way of preserving some of the summer/autumn goodness for later reference; it's very easy to make, and whilst it's not a long-term storage solution, (I believe 6 months is about the limit of safe storage) apparently the lacto-fermentation process releases even more vitamins & minerals than you'd get from eating it fresh. A SHTF winner all round. :beer:Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -

PP and Mrs LW, I have the Seeds of Change pouched rice and bits and they can be heated in a pan with addition of only 2 tbsp of water (see instructions on pkt, I'm not winging it). I no longer have a microwave so I always check these things.
Haven't got any of the Tilda but did read the destructions on their pkt in the store and I'm sure it was the same for them. I cobnsidered that the minimal quantity of water required and the option to stir heat on one of my alternative cooking devices would be very do-able. HTH.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I don't have a microwave and just break up the rice whilst in the pouch and pop into a frying pan with a drop of fat. They make great fried rice.

I used the whole winter's salt stash last night on the fire, to stop the bloody house burning down. The RV must've been a stoker on the Flying Scotsman in a previous life - god the way he shovels coal on. Wind really picked up and the fire was glowing red hot, the radiators smelled of hot metal, and we had to do something fast ! So the entire salt stash went on it and I need to buy it in again. Phew.0

I knew I hadn't spelt it right, but with little sleep couldn't work it out. Our local Chinese supermarket sells jars of it, but I haven't tried it yet. I was told it sold soju, a kind of rice wine, but I haven't found it yet.
RIP chocclareI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
MAR well done that must have been a very hairy scary moment, you can buy more salt much more cheaply than you can replace all the belongings in your home pet!!! Hats off for sorting out what could have been a very dangerous situation. Might be worth checking the stove casing and innards when it has cooled down to make sure nothing has warped or cracked from the heat just to be on the safe side, Look after yourself Cheers Lyn xxx.0
