All eyes on the Senate & the House of Representatives; likely ramifications for the world economy, folks? I have friends who will be hit hard personally by any shutdown, but I'm wondering how it will affect people's confidence in the dollar. If at all...?

Who knows anymore? The whole world economy is a shambles. It's not plates spinning it's a whole dinner service for a banquet.

It's like the twilight zone..... anything can happen ... or not!

    :) Evening all.

Watching the mad fandango in US with bemusement. Is this any way to run a country? On t'other hand, didn't Belgium run without a government at all for months because someone couldn't decide whose turn it was to empty the bins?

I kept my head screwed on and went to plant broad beans on the lottie for an hour after work. Food's important.

Ya can say that again... I think aside from the preps we need a sack of popcorn and a comfy chair, at maximum safe distance.

    Mardatha, here's one for you.

There was an article in the Times today saying heather honey from Inverness-shire is as effective as manuka honey in fighting infection.

And as there is more manuka honey sold than the entire production of New Zealand, that may not be altogether surprising

Linkie here - the Times is behind a paywall now but you get the gist from the bit they let you see

Well done Daz, only 2 months to a debt free life  is there anyway you could manage to put some of the money you would normally pay into a savings pot once its done? Would give you a good cushion for the future. Just a thought.

Thank you GQ for the idiots guide to scaring a country half to death. Hope all those government employee's have tins of food under their beds because anyone who doesnt is really silly. I would be doing the ' told you so' dance that I reserve for my DD. Whilst hanging out the washing I glanced in the shed and noticed a piece of wood with heavy duty casters attached to it :T OH had scrounged it off a friend who was dismantling a storage unit and it will soon be refitted to go under my bed 'a la GQ' With him instructing me - for instructing read no dont do it that way - Im sure I can make a version of what you have described.

  • Looks like a lot of people in Washington are getting a few days off.. they've had plenty of time to get ready so hopefully they have cash put aside for a rainy day. I've always been taught that you should have the equivalent of six months wages set aside in savings if possible, not easy but worth doing. The days when you could walk out of one job on Friday and have a new one by Monday have gone and I think we're entering a time when most households will have time without work over the course of a normal working life. The importance of the US shutdown globally is that sorting out the federal budget increases the risk that they won't be able to increase the debt ceiling - now that would be interesting
Daz378 must feel good to nearly have that debt paid, I'm looking forward to having my credit card paid off - end of the year is my target.

Things look dire in America right enough, there must be many in a difficult position. Whilst having a minimum amount of savings is an ideal, unfortunately these days many are living hand to mouth, all over not just in America. For it to be one of the most forward thinking superpower countries, they are not doing too well at sorting this mess out. It must be awful being sent home with no pay or not receiving any pensions and already living on the breadline,

Today's mission for me will be sorting out my store cupboards and increasing medicine and first aid stocks, then that's another couple of things off the list in case the s#*€ comes our way too!
