    Starting from scratch again
  • I started from scratch last year (25). Before that all my savings and salary went for my rent, bills and education with some leftover for less important stuff, like... food.

The amount I saved so far definitely makes me feel more secure. Though, somehow increased my doubt in banks :( I'm probably just a negative person, but I really wish there was a more secure place to keep your savings.
  • Hi all!
    finally an updated signature!

JennyRowling - totally agree about feeling secure.

Just had a good few days with my son on the trains exploring Devon and Cornwall. Survived this quiet well in regards to spending. Another week at work then I have another week off. This will be days out this year. Plus there will be more train trips to look forward too. Must check out those advance tickets!
My Extra amount from my extended hours is in a seperate pot and this will be for renewing our ageing kitchen. I have found a excellent carpenter so intend to get this done bit by bit.

    Money saving wishes to all!

I have finally saved up some emergency fund - £2000 at the moment. I think it's quite reasonable for a single person with no car, no mortgage, no commitments :) That money would cover my deposit if I had to move out, few months living cost in case of a job loss, an unexpected trip abroad to my family, a private doctor visit etc. Will be adding an extra £100 each month (hopefully) and do my best not to spend it, no matter what. I don't have anyone else in my life who could help me in case of an emergency, so I really need to get better at saving.

Good luck to you all savers :) especially to those who are struggling!
  • Hi Blue_Mango - great to hear from you again. Well done that is quite an acheivement.:T

Thank you, davenport151 :) I can see from your signature that you're doing not too bad yourself?
  • An extra day at work helps! Less time to spend it too!
I think it takes needing to live on minimum to appreciate what you have to spend Vs what you want to spend (or think you can)!

  • Hi Guys!!

Sorry it's been a while since I've checked in on the thread... Had a busy summer (OH is a teacher) so been spending lots of time out and about and had a nice (and cheap!) little break at my Mum & Dad's house in Spain...

Touch wood, savings are going really well - we've been really disciplined and are both working as much overtime as possible to boost the deposit fund!!

The allotment has also proved fruitful, both in terms of a distraction to spending money as we spend a lot of time up there, and for growing our own food, which we've virtually lived off all summer and given some to friends/family!! Definitely something we'll continue!!

Hope everyone is well and looking after the pennies... It's amazing how it soon mounts up!!

    Lots of love, Shoot xxx

  • Wow shoot! What a great return on the allotment.

In regards to home improvements it looks like it will need to be the electrician first as our extractor fan in the bathroomneeds to be attended too. Though thats ok as I can see where the money is for this. Then will follow on with the kitchen project.

A lovely day out by train last week and one more planned for tomorrow (although I have been paid its not technically september yet) I have enough from August to pay for this! We are also having a day out on monday.

    Money saving wishes to all!

Anyone mind if I join you? I'm starting from scratch again - just had some medical bills that have wiped me out.:(

I guess that's what the emergency fund is for - at least I had the money available! I still have some cash in various other pots for the car etc but my emergency fund and the holiday fund are now pretty much starting at zero again.

I started the grocery challenges again in Jan and have been finding that very useful. I've also just started checking my everyday account every few days and rounding the amount down and sweeping the 'extra' into another account. That seems to be working quite well so far!

I'll get something back from my health fund for the surgery so will drop that straight back into savings - but hoping to save a fair bit this year.

I'm new to the budgeting and attempting to save, so the spending diary is going to be something I have to adjust to but most definitely need to do it if I want to have a handle on my finances. Especially since there's so little to play with and I hate feeling trapped by poor habits and no funds.

Hoping to pick up a few tips here so I'll peruse the thread :D
