Wer're heading to the north coast of Northern Ireland for 3 days in the middle of August. Its costing us £120 for a cottage for 3 days and prob about £30 in petrol cos its about 80 miles away.Hopefully the weather will keep up and well be able to go down to the beach 1 of the days.Dont really mind cos we went to Majorca last yr but it cost us £2300 self catering for 11 days not inc spending money so theres no way I could afford that every year!I think a holiday is what you make it and it doesn't have to be abroad every year so hope everyone enjoys their holidays.0

Totally agree with you there Broke in regards to UK holidays. There are so many lovely places around. I haven't visited Ireland yet but do intend to go to Scotland later in the Summer (This is one of our planned train trips).Back on the trains again!0

Hi everyoe, can i tag along too?
I'm a newbie to the site and at 44yrs old i've never had any savings.
The reason - at 21 yrs old fell on pregnant with twins, then bought a house with partner and since then its been a huge uphill struggle to keep going......as a family we've made our own fun days out taking a picnic and drinks to save money when the boys were growing up.
One is working now and the other is doing a law degree so just a couple more years for him.
Adam whos working has started to pay me £150 per month board and i'm using this at the moment to re-decorate the whole house - not been done for 9 years - so i'm at the moment trying to save from grocery shopping and all those irritating impulse buys!!
I'm also saving to go on my first ever holiday abroad next year and put my first £25 in my tin just this week.......hoping to have £1000 by this time next year - thanks for all the tips on here its really useful and you sound like a great bunch.
Hope u dont mind me tagging along and updating with my savings plan and where i've saved :-))0 -

Enjoying redaing about your holidays DH and I are off for a very MSE weekend in the Caravan cost £30 from fri-sun not bad at all

Welcome Pixiedust and Kindle!!
The more the merrier I reckon!!
Not much to update really, got a £10 compo cheque from work this week, so that's been paid into the holiday fund - every little helps!!
My lovely Ma & Pa are paying for me and OH's weekend in London with them this weekend and wouldn't dream of letting us put our hands in our pocket, so will be a real treat!!
Can't wait for all the overtime I've worked this month to get paid now! Need to top-up the savings... I'm sure it's addictive!!

Wow! More newbies!
Welcome Kindle and Pixiedust. You are more than welcome to come along for the ride!Back on the trains again!0 -
Hi there Newbees! Welcome to the site. Will post up my new total next Thursday.Did some o/t 2day so should get my o/t money next week.Hope to have at least £1300/6000 by then.0

So... stats re adjusted. This was the hit taken from the fridge freezer. Though I think things have gone a bit pear shaped this month anyway.
Still need some spends for hols from this though get paid when we are away.:)
Kindle 1968 - thats where most of my savings came from cutting down on the shopping. The year before last we didn't get a payrise either (I know some people haven't had one for serveral years)! So it was time to stop relying on other people for extra money and to manage what I had.Back on the trains again!0 -
Hi people, looks like i'm just about going to make the £1300 target.Went on a family trip to the cinema yesterday which cost nearly £25 by the time admission, sweets popcorn and petrol as its 12miles there and back were took out of the budget but I had enough set aside to cover this and it was a nice treat for the children.Am putting the money in the credit union tomorrow so I don't get tempted to spend it over the weekend!0

I've done the exact same thing today BATM!!
Put £25 of unspent "pocket money" into my bank account - bringing it to just over £100 left over at the end of the month.
We've also managed to put £200 into the holiday fund somehow!? I didn't think we'd be able to do this - but between cutting right back on unnecessary spends, plus a grocery shop and tank of diesel courtesy of my Paps, we've spent less than I anticipated!
So, I plan to buy my first £100 of Premium Bonds with that money. It's a long-term way of saving which I don't plan to touch... Of course there's the added bonus of the monthly draw - happy days!!
So, all in all a pretty good month. We're need 2x NSD's now until Payday on Friday when I'll be able to move some money and see how things are looking!!
Glad everyone is ok - and doing well on the savings front!!
Lots of MSE love to you all!! x:T DEBT FREE AS OF APRIL 2013! :T"I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul"0
