As to this Fifty Shades cobblers: I believe that soft-!!!!!! written by and for women has been available for some time, so what's so special about it?
Twilight is a series of books written (and I use the term loosely) by an American nut. It was made into a series of films, which have done extraordinarily well, defying all logic, but its purpose is to entertain and if people are entertained then all power to all involved.
Fanfiction is literally, fiction written by fans, using characters from popular media, and occasionally real people. For the most part it's truly terrible and it's to be expected of amateur scribble, but occasionally it's really very good. Generally speaking, the more popular a 'source' is will mean more fanfiction, but that does depend on how 'good' the source is. Fans will write things about characters they care about, if the characters are strong enough to take it that is.
Mostly, it will take the form of stories being written within the source's universe, but, as is the case with 50 Shades of Grey, the characters are removed to an 'AU' (Alternative Universe) and given new stories, but they're still the characters the readers know. In this case, the only reason 50 Shades was able to be published was because the characters were changed - they stopped being Bella and Edward and became Anastasia and Christian.
By far the two biggest sources that inspire fanfiction at the moment are Glee and Buffy the Vampire Slayer - they inspire people for very different reasons.
Buffy came at a time when TV shows really explored their characters and their stories, and so there are relatively few storylines, but many incredibly well-rounded, multi-dimensional characters, and people like to play with those characters.
Glee, on the other hand, suffers from a different problem, they do create good characters, but then they ruin them and then don't give them decent enough stories, and so people write their own because they feel a connection to the characters. I can't really think of a show that takes so much care in creating its characters, and giving them detailed backstories and proper characterisation, and then will ignore it and drop them the minute it becomes 'not easy' to keep it going.
Interestingly the most popular couple in fanfiction on Glee is also the most popular couple on the show - which is very rare, but it goes to show just how wasted these characters are on the show, that so many people feel the need to plug in the story gaps themselves.
I'll finish by stating that I have read about three pages of 50 Shades of Grey because my boss demanded it, and I can confirm that there is much worse fanfiction out there, but there is also much, much better - and as someone who, until last week wasn't even aware of its existence as a genre, I've now got a huge story loaded up on my Kindle to read on holiday, instead of traditional books. From the five chapters (which are large in their own right) I've read, it's far superior to 50 Shades, and actually, quite a few traditional books, but then it is written by a professional writer. Unfortunately it won't be for sale as, despite having original characters, it does feature some copyrighted characters as the main protagonists.
I'm going back to the Pets board now, this place is scary!:eek:0 -

I've read both (the complete Twilight and 50 shades) and I can't see any relation... Twlight is for teenagers, if you are > 30 you'll probably think: yeah, sure.... love is like that...
I don't think they are brillant books but they kept me entertained for a holiday, which sometimes is the only thing I look for. Personally I'm not interested in the erotic part , but I found the story interesting enought to keep reading. I'm waiting for a friend to finish the 2nd part and lend it to me.
if you pm me your e mail addy i will send you the second and third parts:)
offer open to anyone who wants the set btwNumber 35 :j0 -
One thing really bugs me about these books
Men get ridiculued for looking at !!!!!! by women. These books come along, and suddenly filth is ok? Books require some imagination to be used, hence i cant help but feel these books are a lot worse than some dodgy dutch video0 -

If you think a book (badly-written, but a book nonetheless) is worse than an industry that can be incredibly damaging and dangerous, then you have some strange thought processes.0 -

Before this came out and some wife came on here, saying my husband does nothing but read rubbish S&M books and now wants to get me involved in it, would have been vindicated in blaming the husband of being the usual type of male by quite a few on here.
Now it's mainstream for women and OK.
But the poster wasn't talking about the industry, just looking at !!!!!!, it could be totally amateur !!!!!! for all you know.NewKittenHelp wrote: »If you think a book (badly-written, but a book nonetheless) is worse than an industry that can be incredibly damaging and dangerous, then you have some strange thought processes.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
So Mummy !!!!!! is now a new genre...
I know a couple of the big publishing houses have bussed in a load of 'moms' and they are sitting in a locked room churning out the copycat versions..... sad. Anything to make a quick buck0 -
It was originally written with Bella and Edward as the main characters, but obviously before publishing they had to be changed.
I have got it, not read it yet. Don't really understand why it's any different to any other erotic fiction!Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16
