asda sp fruit and fibre is only 68p and tastes lovely.tbh i have halved my food bill by buying mainly smart price, and more home baking.

Would also definitely recommend the dw tablets.
Cream cleaner is good too.

Have people been giving Mr T's new 'discounter brands' a go? I'd be interested to know how people rate those compared with TV items.

Meanwhile, I couldn't beleive my luck when I discovered a jar of Tesco coffee for 69p (ish) in my local Tesco Express. I wasn't expecting too much but was really pleasantly surprised with the results of a generous spoonful! It wasn't a TV label but I'm sure it was a Tesco brand.

Got the Tesco 'Discounted brands' lemon juice and tomato sauce in my shop last week - there isnt really any difference. I also picked up the Corn Flakes without telling anyone (I used to buy kellogs) and no-one in my house mentioned a difference.

I always buy Value beans/tomatoes/kidney beans. The only thing I dont buy tinned wise is spaggetti as the children dont like it. I wont buy the value squash either as I find it tastes awful.

I love Lidl coke- tastes better than Coca Cola in my opinion, the Tesco own brand is good too.

Dont buy Morrisons Value Ketchup either - really runny and quite salty!

I went on to mysupermarket.com and costed out my shopping list (from menu planner) before I went to asda this week and it took me less time to do my shop and cost less as I only picked up the things that were on the list, and I checked the prices as I was doing it. My bill was a bit higher as where there were items that were an obvious half price roll-back (lady grey teabags, soft brown sugar and horlicks bogof) I bought two. It was worth the time on the pc checking the prices, without doubt and I also look out ofr more sp items to try. It's almost addictive and such a joy when no one moans about the sp meal I have put together!

BTW - does anyone use drinking chocolate for baking? I usually use cocoa and have been looking at the varying prices in the shops. Cadburys in sainsburys is £1.95 and their own 250g is £1.24, in tesco's Cadburys is £1.77 and their own £1.24, in waitrose they only do 125g Cadburys for £1.39 and their own 250g £1.49. Sainsburys is bumping up their price of cadburys and makes money on the people who buy that brand and put their own brand next to it to make their own brand look even cheaper!

I quite like Sainsbury's basic salami - I can't really tell the difference between it and the cheapest deli cut equivalent when used in toasted sandwiches.

Had some people round last night and tried some Sainsbury's Basics products... A few weeks ago I started trying their Basics fruit and veg range and everything has been fine and in some cases better - the strawberries are smaller but sweet and the mushrooms have a lot of flavour, they are very 'meaty' ones if you know what I mean!!

We also tried:
Basics orange juice - one of the guests asked where it was from as it tasted so nice and couldn't believe it was Basics!
Basics dips tray - someone thought this set was from Waitrose, they are lovely...
Basics cashew nuts - great.
Basics bourbon biscuits - lovely and not as sweet as Bourbons usually are.
Basics digestives and milk chocolate digestives - both lovely.

However...
Basics low fat fruit yoghurt is hideous. A definite no-no!
Basics reduced fat margarine is nasty.

We have a few other things in the cupboard/fridge still to try, so I'll post again soon...

I have probably said this before but don't buy the Sains basic bread. Dry hard small and horrible. I buy alsdi's 37p bread much nicer

I 'weaned' myself off expensive coffees by mixing with Tesco or Asda 38p stuff, and now only drink the cheap stuff Value or Basic noodles are good (bacon flavour is a fav in our house), but Asda had a 5 for £1 on Batchelors noodles so have a cupboard full Asda Basic frozen chicken breasts (£4.60) are lovely, so are their yorkshire puds. I used to buy basic frozen prawns to add to a seafood pasta, but their own brand actually work out cheaper and are far nicer! We are not big on biscuits, but like to have some for guests but always value ones and not had a complaint yet Value /basic tin foil is good, but it's jumped up in price recently ? Oh, Tesco 'market value bacon' £1.08 a pack (we got 8 slices in a pack) is definately good value - it looked better than the stuff at £3odd!! Tasted nice too -yum. Ohhh, and one more, loo roll!!! We get through a roll a day in our house, so I bought Tesco value / asda basic to try to discourage such frivolous and wanton wiping...lol, but, still use a roll a day but costs me pennies in comparison to Andrex etc - I have noticed though - due to DD(6) keeping inserts for art stuff, that the Tesco inserts recently are really wide compared to size they were before ... bigger insert = less paper on the roll? Will have to check that one
