I started reading this thread in June and since then I have gradually changed over from shopping at Mr T to Asda as I have found SP items better than Value. I am now always looking out for their SP range and trying new things. So far I haven't found anything that I dislike and wouldn't buy again, somethings just take a bit of getting used to. My shopping bills have come down by 35% and I intend to try and reduce them even more. We are any average family of 4 (girls 11 and 14) with 2 dogs and 8 chickens. The girls do moan about food, but if they're hungry enough they will eat it. I make sure I have made enough cakes each week to tempt them into eating what ever dinner might be! Alas, they will always find something to moan about at that age, but my dinner's are no longer the first thing they moan about, this morning was the towels for a shower, they are too hard these days as I have stopped using the tumble dryer!
I currently have SP in my cupboards..... all the basic tinned foods, packets, white bread (for their morning toast, won't eat my HM granary), flour, juices, bio washing powder and fruit/veg. I have bought Sainsbury's basic toilet roll from a recommendation on this thread to try out, Mr T's was horrible and I haven't tried SP yet.0 -

It's a lot cheaper than Johnsons in any of the big stores and they always smell really nice.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I am quite happy with Mr T's toilet roll. The family have now got used to it and have stopped moaning too! I would also recommend the value teabags. it's a standing joke in our family that I only ever drink half a cup of tea, but since changing to value tea I always finish the whole cup. Also get the tinned beans/tomatoes/kidney beans/sweetcorn. Jellies, ham and beef paste, golden syrup, choc spread, oats, toothpaste, buttery spread, cheese, fruit juice,, flour and dried fruit are all good, chocolate is great(don''t try Morrisons value, its yuk!). have tried most tesco value stuff - give the frozen fish fillets and pork chops a go too. We've got the chops tonight, thawed, the meat cut off and cooked up in a nice casserole with veg and mash. The only things I really don't like are the cornflakes, the packet they came in is probably nicer to eat! Oh, and the stock cubes seem to be ever so salty so i don't think I will be buying those again.0

I needed hairspray at the weekend and had previously treated myself to Elnett (which is over 5 now!). I really need to watch the pennies at the moment and decided to give the Value hairspray a try. I must admit having picked it up and walked down the cleaning stuff aisle and seeing the can of air freshener looked exactly the same size etc apart from the writing I wasn't expecting much for 34p.
How wrong I was.
Large tin, I think its 400ml for 34p.
Very fine spray, like most of the expensive hairsprays. I rarely put my hair up as its very long and heavy so it tends to wander after a while. Not with this stuff. I've used it today and even messed about with my hair and its still holding in place. Its not sticky at all and my hair moves (i.e. its not one solid brick). I didn't need that much on my hair and it brushes out easily without going white or gunky. I've used Tesco own brand before and its not as good as the Value (the mid-range brand was sticky and horrible with a horrible fragrance). The Value hairspray doesn't have a heavy scented or sickly smell like most hairpsrays, its not completely scent free its more a very light pleasant smell. Yeah ok, its not the sort of can of hairspray I'd take out with me, simply because of the size.
I'd say its a bargain for 34p.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0 -
Good morning all!
I am a member of 'Which?', and I used it the other day to check their dishwasher tablet tests. My jaw dropped when I saw that they rate Tesco Value dishwasher tablets as THE BEST overall. The TV tablets are not a combination tablet (meaning that you have to add salt and rinse aid separately) but according to Which?, even when you add the cost of these other products, they are still the cheapest-per-wash. I've looked around and the average price (across all brands) of a pack of 30 tablets is £6; Tesco Value packs of 30 tablets are £1.78!!! Apart from the cost, what astonished me was that Which? rates the TV tablets as the best overall in terms of cleaning performance too (they even beat Finish and the fancy expensive stuff).
Does anyone use them, and what do you think of the results?
If Which? is to be believed, we could be on to a winner
Yes I use these and they're fine although I've not bought the expensive brands like Finish so can't compare with them. But everything comes out perfectly clean so that's good enough for me!!0 -
the asda sp chicken and mushroom pasta n sauce is really nice. We eat alot of the batchelors one. I did a blind test with the value and the expensive.... the cheap won... so from now on i will be buying thatSealed Pot Challenge - No 1520Want to be debt clear by June 2012:j0

I Just tried Sainsbury's basics Fresh Mushroom Tortellini - a BIG packet. Can't tell you how much they were cos' they were in the fridge for a few days and I can't find the reciept, but DD and I stood and worked out that they were MUCH cheaper than all the others.
They were pretty good - not overwhelmingly mushroom, but the pasta had a nice texture.

I bought sainsburys basic gravy granules last week and couldn't believe how much nicer than the sainsburys standard brand it was.
Not suitable for vegetarians though as it contains beef fat, whcih is what makes it tasty in my opinion.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I think that on the whole, Sainsburys Basics stuff is nicer than Tesco value or Asda Smart Price. I regularly buy Basics:
Mashed potato - 31p
cheese slices - 55p
creme caramel (nicer and lower cals and fat than the regular stuff)54p for 4
madeira cake - not always available but lovely and around 39p
mini sausage rolls - the frozen ones
frozen peas
apple juice
coleslaw
cream cheese
Of the Tesco Value stuff I only regularly buy the bread rolls - 29p for 12.
I am going to try the basics gravy granules though.Jane

I have been slowly changing over to Value products and the dishwasher tablets are great I've been using them for a month now and there is no difference - just the price obviously! I now use the tinned toms, sweetcorn, chicken paste, stuffing mix, stock cubes (they are salty so I now dont add salt to casseroles), toilet paper, mint sauce, crisps, yoghurts and margarine. Thats all I can remember! I am going shopping tomorrow and will only be going for value!0
