we have bought tescos value tinned fruit; grapefruit, mandarins, fruit cocktail, pineapple, peaches and made a huge fruit salad with orange juice. we drained all the tins as most were in a light syrup and it was a yummy snack - keeps in the fridge for a few days.

Monday I mixed up tins of fruit cocktail, mandarins, raspberries and grapefruit then drained and split into four 1l tupperware tubs, then added jelly (2 packs of asda smartprice strawberry stuff, 8p a pack I think)... Dirt cheap, at least two portions of fruit per tub I'd say, and ideal for packed lunch this week :D Trifle minus custard and cream really! I reckon it'd keep for a week at least in the fridge.

I wish I had read through this thread again recently. At the weekend I bought a bag of Value frozen peas and they are MINGING. I used to buy them all the time, so I really should have remembered WHY I started buying own brand and never went back.

Anyway, I don't think I can face putting them with my delicious home made fish pies and macaroni cheese  but I am loth to waste almost a whole bag of them! Has anybody managed to get an edible dish out of them - soup perhaps?

IOIWE - thanks for the suggestion. Have you actually tried it successfully with Tesco Value peas? Only when I eat them on their own, I hate them so much that I'm a bit concerned they might make horrible soup as well, thus wasting the other ingredients :o

  • i've never tried them, i tend to only get a small bag of peas as OH is a bit fussy with them and doesn't eat them in many things, that and freezer is chock full of hm everything e;se at the moment, maybe try peas, onion and chicken stock, add a potato and blitz up, make just one portion then, if it's awful, keep them for if anyone sprains their ankle instead ;)

Funny you should say that! Ironically, the reason I needed a new bag of peas in the first place was that I ruined my previous (unopened, decent own-brand) bag by using it for medical purposes a couple of weeks ago when I picked up a sizzling-hot oven rack with both hands

My MrA adventure was cancelled at the week-end, but I would still like any recommendations for what to look for/avoid please, for when I DO get to one....

Re:the peas Bargain, could you perhaps blitzed them up with loads of mint to make a minty mushy-pea type... ...thingie? I guess because our veg usually gets mixed into mash or gravy or sauce of some description, we've become immune to individual tastes so I can continue to buy the value.

Was charged 35p this am for TV tinned peaches - last week they were 19p. Grrrrr if only I'd known I would have stocked up thats almost a 100% rise.
