Without doubt my DivX/Xvid player is the best bit of kit I have bought for my TV for years. Had it about a year or so now and its great.

Coupled with the re writting power of a DVD-RW your pretty much sorted for transfering (most) avi files from your PC to your TV.

I'm tempted by the Umax one, since I know people who have purchased their PVRs and are very happy with them.

Out of all those mentioned, which one would people recommend the highest?

I have shopped from svp over the last few years and never had any problems with them whether it's returning stuff(which I haven't had to do as their stuff is good quality generally)
    I would recommend them.

Can anyone answer me this: does Divx/Xvid mean the same as .Avi?

I have tons of .Avi files on my computer from downloading tv programs from Uknova and would love to burn them all to dvd but it would take forever to encode them all.

look for a program called Gspot

it will tell you what codec (divx xvid etc) is used in the avi file

    hope that helps

That looks quite intriguing. Does anyone know if it handles widescreen output?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I bought that Biostek DivX player from Pixmania a few weeks ago. In fact one of the reviews on the product page is mine. I gave it a very generous 6/10 but the majority of my negative review has 'somehow' been mysteriously chopped off.

Anyway, I had two key issues with the machine:
    1. It came with a 2-pin European plug on it!!!; and
    2. It did not come with a USB slot.

To be fair, I had been influenced by mention of a USB slot in a bogus review on the product page, rather than Pixmania's official description. However, upon discovering the European plug, I then had to decide between spending £3 on postage to return it or £1.50 for a European plug adapter. I opted for the latter and have fortunately not had any reason to regret it so far.

So, the item now works in the way it's meant to (though a firmware upgrade wouldn't go amiss) but I won't be taking any risks on Pixmania again.

I must admit I bought a Canon printer from them about a year ago and that came with a European plug. As far as I know that goes against UK laws on selling electronic equipment, but I had a spare cable so I didn't bother complaining. Having said that, the printer died within its warranty and after sending it back for repairs, they couldn't repair it so we were sent a much better one :)

But I wouldn't use Pixmania again. Did someone say they had ties with Currys? Figures...

This one you can plug usb devices straight into.
It'll play Hi-Def aswell and i have been informed they are reliable.

whats the updatability on this, did a quick search and came up with nothing!
