What's the deal?
Cheap DVD players have been around the £20-£30 range for around a year, yet for the first time we're now seeing DVD players which will play Divx movies, MP3s and other computer file-types at this price range.
If this sounds like gobbledygook to you, what it means is if you want to play downloaded content on your telly, be it music, video or Jpeg images; you can simply burn it (save it) onto your computer's CD/DVD recorder, then play it in these DVD player.
The Cheapest DVD players with DivX
What's DivX?
DivX is a compressed video file format, which shrinks video files so that they take up much less space on your computer. Obviously this can mean a reduction in picture and sound quality, but on higher settings it is barely noticeable. Think of it as the video equivalent of MP3 music files.
Most regular DVD players are unable to play DivX files since they lack the necessary codec (software) to decode them properly. DivX capable players are usually more expensive - which is why these are such a bargain

- BIOSTEK XS-250 Pro DVD Player £25.30 inc delivery. This player is available from Pixmania*. As well as its multi-format capability, it has a built-in dolby digital decoder and composite out. Unfortunately it isn't multi-region (so you can only play DVD films bought in Europe). The only slight negative is while Pixmania is part Dixons/Currys chain meaning its very legit, feedback on its customer service isn't the best.
- Eltax DV-154 Divx DVD Player £30.84 inc delivery. This is nice neat player, available from web retailer ebuyer. As well as playing many file formats it's also reported to be (unconfirmed) region-free, meaning you can play DVDs bought in any country. You'll find more technical info in the posts below.

While it looks a good deal Martin, I would warn people off buying from Pixmania.
I bought a DivX DVD player from them last year (it was posted on here, around £30ish) but had to return it after the tray wouldn't shut properly, or if it did the player was so loud that I couldn't hear the TV.
Basically I got it returned (took them 8 weeks to eventually send me an email with the return code) but had to wait another 3 months for refund. I only got £15 back from them, that could only be used on their site too.
I should have got a refund, but it had been dragging on for far too long already sold the voucher on ebay.
If you're gonna buy one and not expect any CS then its a great deal, but beware if the player goes wrong you'll be in for a very long drawn out process of getting a replacement or any money back!0 -

The DV-154 DVD player features a multitude of video and audio playback options, including DivX (Plays Divx 6) . Housed behind an elegant half mirror front, this slim unit is a punch worthy of any Hollywood heavyweight.
Oh and its region free and has progressive scan, better deal than Martins advert.

there's no multi region hack code for the BIOSTEK yet, either.
I guess if you can flash the firmware you can oust that annoying R2 lock. However, not sure if you can flash the firmware as easy as the Yamada series.
This is the place to look up third party firmware. MTZ is famed for his collection of goodies and also a great forum.

I used this site when I upgraded my Yamada - I got to pick the subtitle font, colour, other language support, etc. It also upgraded the codecs that the linux based machine (DivX player) used.
Anyway, a few of you might find it useful.0 -
Just thought I would bump this for the people that hadn't seen it!0

You have to be very brave to buy anything from Pixmania.
They have the worst customer service even though they they have branch in London but all good have to returned to France.
They can take your money month before they have dispatched the goods.
They are the part of Dixon/Curry group so no wonder there service is so poor.
Regards
PS I would never ever take out a Cash Back phone contract from Mobileshop.com they at present are the worst cashback performer.0 -
Argos does a DivX DVD player for £30, Bush branded, bought one myself, and i haven't had any problems with it.0
