Does anyone know of a cheap player that can do:

    DivX, XviD, and MPEG-4?

They also must be able to playback AAC and a variety of 5.1 formats...

    Any thoughts?

    cheers! :T

  • You can get a divx dvd player with hdmi and dvi ports for 49.99 excluding postage. The good thing about it is that it comes with a hdmi and dvi cable.

Well the Eltax one mentioned will do DivX, Xvid (not sure about MPEG4), AAC and I'd be amazed if it doesn't do 5.1

You can see some specs on it here

I bought a Philips DIVX player about a year ago from France, and the quality of the DIVX movies that I've downloaded has been pretty useless. However, it can't be the source files as if I use divx-to-DVD converter and burn them to DVD they play fine (although at probably the equivalent of SVHS quality rather than full DVD)

It's particularly when the shots are "panning", which I guess means a lot of the picture is changing. The picture really jitters. These movies are almost unwatchable and make my wife feel sick they are so bad (literally).

Perhaps it's just my Philips player?? Perhaps it doesn't have a powerful enough CODEC chip??? Perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience of DIVX and see if anyone has suggestions.

You are probably playing a Non PAL film. In the UK we have 25 frames per second but in the USA etc they use NTSC which could be either 23 FPS or even 29 FPS which means if you television/DVD is not set up to play NTSC you will notice a skip (because 4 frames won't be played when playing a 29FPS film on a UK setup( 25 FPS)

To get around this some DVD players have a option in setting to automatically switch between PAL and NTSC. Make sure you enable this option. You will also have to make sure your television will also play NTSC( most do nowadays)

    I hope this helps

If only... My wife and I travel internationally at lot for long periods of time. Music and videos used to be taken out of their cases and put in quality Caselogic storage, but it get heavier and heavier, so a few years ago I bit the bullet and ripped all our CDs to mp3.

This year, with availability of disks f serious capacity at a reasonable price, I've finally done the same with all our DVDs. Its taken 1.5TB: 3 x 500GB disks. I chose not to compress to divx due to the time this would take and the loss of quality and features.

    Hmm. Interesting post.

Its all well and good, if you want to amass loads of CDs/DVDs (and lose them periodically like we do..) but thats not really my cup of tea (and trying to find a reliable spec for a player that supports RW media is not easy) so - I recently bought this networked media streamer to get away from having to burn everything.

Probably a separate topic altogether, but in the long term surely its going to be cheaper to not have to buy DVDs/CDs (RW or otherwise?)

No you definitely want to burn them and keep them on your hard drive. Its called backup and is very important. If you download movies from lovefilm or other service you have to think if they will be able, or willing, to allow you to download them again, for no cost, when your hard drive fails. ALL hard drives fail, some sooner, some later. Be prepared, act scoutish!

Best deal for multi region dvd player.

I bought this dvd player and it plays everything I've thrown at it.

If you join as new customer I think you get £15 discount or 20% not sure which.

Also free returns. There is a £3.99 delivery charge but if the right code you can get free delivery as well.

I have found one that has DivX and XVid capabilty aswell as being multi-region all for just £30.54 delivered!

It is the Umax Kazuki DVD-2700X MPEG4/DivX/DVD Player

    http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=2087

Seems like a good deal to me, has anyone purchased this product and has anyone bought from SVP before?

Is this the cheapest Multi-Region, DivX and Xvid player?

    Si
I have had one of these DVD players for just over 6 months now - and it has never let me down.

It IS multi-region - and it DOES play everything it says it plays.

It is the best DVD player out there (esp for £30) by a country mile!

    Ryan.
