Stuart.
Are you sure it's Aldi and not Lidl0 -
I can confirm that the Alba DVD62XI in sainsburys will play Xvid files.
I can not confirm it will play DivX files as it did not want to play one of mine.
I can also confirm, it played a region 1 disc straight out the box.
I can also confirm it is quite a nice little machine. (especially for £18 !!)
Summary...
A cracking little machine. If you make sure the files have Xvid in the title and not Divx you should be ok. I would say this is probably more of a machine that plays avi as a bonus and you should think of it that way. If you want a cheap DVD player (that happens to be multi region out of the box) that will also play "some" avi files (xvid) then this is for you.
If you fall into the special bunch of folks who are capable of converting a divx file to a xvid file and feel that most of the time you should have no problem finding xvid filesthen this machine is ok for you too.
However if you specifically want a avi player then you might have to fork out a bit more (just a bit) and get something that specifically is designed to play divx.
If you understand none of this summary, get one that says divx on the box.
One of the best buys I have ever made, but not for everyone. Some complain at the quality of Alba, but we all keep our reciepts don't we?0 -

Surely thats not right as the machine will just try and play avi files if it is dixv\xvid\mpeg4 capable. If it can play xvids then it should be able to play divx's although some machines can be picky about various things.

I should add...
After a bit of research I have found it is actually quite hard to find Divx files, most of them are Xvid. The ratio is over 10 xvid to every divx. Like I said if you are capable of searching for a file then you should be cabable of putting the word xvid in the same search. :rolleyes2: and the chances are very very high. Most searches that are available in divx are also available in xvid. Just make sure it is an xvid file if you buy this Alba player.
So I guess I will change my summary.
If you are capable of putting the word xvid into the same search as you put your file name, then it is probably not going to make that much difference if you buy a divx player or this £18 sainsbury Alba. Even if you do not put Xvid there is over a 90% chance the file will be xvid and not divx anyway. But it will not play divx, technically it recognises it cant (it can but thinks it cant if you really like to split hairs) and reports an error. The codecs are different, most divx players can play xvid, but they are not the same. Although al we can see with our eyes is the word "avi" telling us it is a video file, the player has to read the header, which we can not see with our eyes, that tells it how to play it. If it can see divx it falls over and says no.
I am getting one of these for my girlfriend today, and might get one for my mum too. They are rather nice little things (keep the reciept, its an alba)0 -
It has been faultless and also can read from memory cards and usb devices as well as being multi-regional. DiVX's are no problem.
As has been mentioned here before though, most players can be made to be multi region anywhere even if the player states its not multi region.

Hi mikeyd,
Just saw your post a moment ago. I am using my Silvercrest player with a 200gb powered USB Western digital hard drive. I have had no problems at all. I have found it to be a good player all around and this was the biggest selling point for me. In fact I am thinking about going to get a third one to give to my Dad.

P.S. I have just read the manual and it has all sorts of restrictions on media size and number of files and folders. I have not been abiding by these rules and I have not had any problems.0 -
My Toshiba SD-270E has just arrived and I have tested out a few files so far.
I tried a couple of 350mb xvid files and they worked brilliantly. I have tried 1 700mb divx video and it played however the audio did seem slightly out of sync.
Edit: Just tried several 700mb xvid files, all of which work fine. They look good, the slow-mo stepping works, 1- 16x fast forward works well, even zoom upto 4x i think it was works on them.
To repeat what has been posted above I haven't been able to test any more divx videos at this point because I can't find any! All the videos i'm checking through appear to be xvid although i'm not too worried as it is divx verified so should work well (I am assuming the one I have tried was badly encoded)
One criticism however.. the menu you use to select the files is the usual boring layout which also means videos titles (and presumably mp3s) are cut to about 12 or so characters which is just not enough.
If you were for instance you were to backup a tv series the episode number would need to be VERY close to the start of the title otherwise all of the files would appear to be named the same.
The files do however appear to be listed in numerical order.
It looks pretty damn cool.0 -
Just read up on this, and thought I'd post it.
There is some new technology being launched, which for me is totally going to bypass the need to have a dvd / divx / xvid player all together.
Basically it is a usb stick that will plug straight into your TV!

Not out yet, but when this technology is out there I can not wait to get it, no more burning to disc!0 -
