Can someone answer a few Q's for technologically inept Sylvester?

    1. Is there a DVD player that will play AVI's?

Yes, you want one that is sold as divx/xvid/mpeg-4 compatible.
AVI is the container file the data is stored inside encoded using an mpeg-4 codec - divx or xvid. Not all divx and xvid files are created with the same resolution, bit rate, and various other features/options so not all play on all players. You want one that people say has good compatibility.
    2. If yes, do these AVI's have to be burnt to DVD, or can you burn to CD-R's and then play them on the DVD player
You can burn them onto cd-r. You should watch out for players that may only read dvd+r not dvd-r as well.
    3. Same question as 2, but same with Divx/WMV/Mpeg files - what if I burnt these from my PC onto CD-R and then tried to play on a DVD player with Divx etc.....or do they have to be burnt to DVD

You need one compatible with wmv as well in this case. There aren't many of these.

    have a look here:

I just want a cheap one that will play at least some of the files, finances dictate sadly.

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5335275.htm

    Only £30

If I use Gspot to find out what these files use etc, would I be able to tell before I buy the player if it would be suitable and what should Gspot be telling me?

That Bush one plays CD-R, so would be compatible.

I'm not overly concerned by WMV as most files are not WMV. Would the CD still play the files that are not WMV or as the CD has a WMV file on it, reject it?

Sorry for all the Q's, it's all foreign to me.

    Thanks

If it had a wmv file or any other file it didn't recognise it would most likely show the ones it could play. These come up in a file explorer type interface and you scroll down and select the one you want to play.

Yes the bush one will play divx files on a cd-r. Whether it will play some of the more unusual encoded files ... your guess is as good as mine.

There are some decent priced players on ebuyer at the moment.
    here

An unknown name to you is not a bad thing in divx as the big names were slow to take it up.

I have just ordered the ebuyer toshiba sd-270e on a punt as a gift for someone £24.86 delivered with google checkout (add a pack of batteries to take the initial order over the £30 to get the discount)

I have a peekton 6006 which is supposed to be one of the more compatible divx/xvid players, but no usb sticks or memory card function. Never had a divx fail, didn't like the raw output from my humax 9200 when i tried it once though.

I don't have many CD's with WMV on anyway as don't like them, but good all the same that they should show the files that aren't.

Unusual files.........are these rare? Most Divx should play?

I will check ebuyer too, especially if they are good prices like the toshiba you bought.

I need to check my CD's to see if enough Divx and some will be Xvid I expect (and these may not play on divx DVD player?)

    Thanks for all your help!

You are welcome, i'm not an expert, just trying to buy right too

The xvid files will play on a divx player. divx is from a company that offers manufacturers licences, xvid is the free open source competitor. (xvid is divx backwards)

I think most files you get will be compatible. 'Packed bitstream' files seem to be a problem for some players, but the files can be fixed.

The toshiba came first thing next day not in 48 hours, i used the supersaver delivery too!

I'm think they have sold out of one of the players in one day the one with usb? Putting files on a usb stick would be nice.

You know more than me.........I mean.........xvid backwards........didn't even notice that!

I'll have a think about what to buy, but sounds promising - I was thinking a whole lot more money.

USB stick - heard of them, but then again know little about them! I'm guessing to transfer one file from one PC to another!

All I want is some divx/xvid files that can play on DVD player rather than on a PC, so all people can sit around and watch on a TV.

    Just something basic

    Just tried Gspot -

    Some results

    1. Mpeg1 Video, Mpeg 1 layer 2 Audio

    2. DivX 5.1.1 video, 0x0055 MPEG-2 Layer 3 Audio

    3. XviD 1.1.0 Final video, 0x0002 (ADPCM)

    4. XviD ISO MPEG-4, 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3

Mean anything? Think a divx machine will be compatible to them?

Or have I confused you :D

USB stick is useful as you don't have to burn dvd's/cd just copy to usb then plug that into the dvd player. dvd player plays the divx from that. when finished overwrite with something else.

I reckon they would play on the bush or any newish player.
a player that states divx6 compatible would be good.

The first half states the video codec, the second the audio. They don't look unusual at all. mpeg layer 3 is mp3 audio for example. Player would need to support divx5.1.1 which is probably quite old.

USB stick sounds good, may have to look at one of them as would be very useful.

Sounds great that they all sound usual anyway. Will see what I can do as would make things easier.

Maybe try the Bush then get another one for another room if as cheap as that Toshiba.

Thanks again for all your help.

Went to Argos this morning and asked for the Bush player I posted above, but out of stock, but were substituting it for a higher spec model at same price. Tried and it works :)

Any WMV files I really want, I will convert

    Thanks for all the help

Argos does a DivX DVD player for £30, Bush branded, bought one myself, and i haven't had any problems with it.
Yes the Bush Div-X player from Argos looks a reasonable buy, but the Argos Info page shows it as Region 2 only.
Non of the 'multiregion hack' web sites I have looked at, list the codes for changing this model to Multiregion.
    Unless anyone knows different?
