I see a number of posts on this thread referring to 'jittery' playback of divx/xvid files on standalone players.
I struggled with this for a while, until I found that it was because the files in question have something called a 'packed bitstream' and many cheap dvd/divx players don't support this.
What you have to do is download a little bit of software called MPEG4MODIFIER, install it, and run all your divx/xvid files through it before burning them - the software will tell you if the file has a packed bitstream, and if so, you simply save the file and unpack the bitstream at the same time!
It's all fairly intuitive, and I promise you, if you follow this routine virtually every divx/xvid file will play on your standalone as smoothly as a commercial dvd.
    Good luck!

That actually looks great, though I seem to have trouble using Memory card with my laptop (need to sort that out really!). So a USB player would be an ideal option for me. Seems like something like this may already be out there, seeing as an SD Card player is available.

Anyone know of an available product please share!!

not exactly what you are after, but i got one of those £99 grundig multimedia players recently, and that can output to TV. just copy it onto the hard drive and plug it in... easy and saves loads of time burning DVDs. i reckon it's paid for itself already.

Folks, I think I missed the boat. I would like to get one of these DVD Players, which can also play the multi-media (including video) content on my USB drive.
    (1)What deals are available now?
    (2) Is there any USB issues I need to worry about? I am hearing so many reports of some USB drives not working, while others work...
Decent buy - Umax Kazuki DVD-2800X MPEG4/DivX/DVD Player for £28.99 - plus 99p postage if you spend over £30 (code for 99p postage is easter99p) http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=2344
The SVP website says "Playback via USB port (image and music files)". Does this mean it will only play digital pics and MP3s, and not videos?

    Thanks in advance!

    Just bought this from Ebuyer

Eltax DV-254 HDMI DVD - USB & Card Reader - Upscaler on the link below:

    https://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/104108/rb/27161865874

If you sign up to Google Checkout (which you can do through the ebuyer site) you get a £10 discount on the item. If you do this and choose the five day delivery option the item is £34.68 delivered to the door. From the spec it seems to play absolutely everything and it has a card reader and USB interface.
Excellent. Thanks. just what I wanted. I've already got a 360 gig extrnal hdd so this will be ideal to play my videos.

Well I was a tad unlucky with this one. I bought it - but it was faulty when it arrived (not reading disks). By the time eBuyer issued a replacement the item was out of stock (but is was in stock when I complete my return on-line form). Really annoying that they did not allocate stock when I first told them of the fault. They are not going to get any more apparently.

Anyway - I'm still looking for a DIVX player with USB support for my harddrive. Any deals out there?
  • This one looks very similar to the eBuyer one
    http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1962

It is £42.79 in total (including postage) so not sure if it is worth it as can't be sure it will play my USB hard drive. Its is also a shame SVP aren't doing the £10 off using Google Payments.

    Has anyone bought this player?

Not as bad as yours but I had a reply from Ebuyer to say they can't sort out an adapter plug for my 2800X so it'll work in the UK and have said to RMA it for a replacement, which is going to be difficult for them as it's been out of stock for weeks. Seems alot of hassle for a £2 adaptor and I like the player

Can someone answer a few Q's for technologically inept Sylvester?

    1. Is there a DVD player that will play AVI's?

    2. If yes, do these AVI's have to be burnt to DVD, or can you burn to CD-R's and then play them on the DVD player

    3. Same question as 2, but same with Divx/WMV/Mpeg files - what if I burnt these from my PC onto CD-R and then tried to play on a DVD player with Divx etc.....or do they have to be burnt to DVD

    Thanks
