I wouldn't recommend a Packard Bell to anyone, not even my worst enemy. They look nice, modern and have high specs when compared to equally priced Sonys, IBMs, Toshibas etc. BUT they are flimsy, unreliable, battery will be a gonner after 3 months. You are better off with a 2nd hand branded laptop from ebay or anywhere else, than getting this one. I did this mistake 4 years ago and regretted the minute I listened to the ignorant PCWorld salesman.
    You've been warned.

And yet PC Pro Magazine gave their top marks to the Advent 7113 from Curry/PCWorld, this month, saying it was excellent VFM.

It came top in the sub £500 range, beating the Acer 3693 (£430), the MSI M670 (£449) and the PC Nextday 52-4601 (£550 - hmm not under £500 I know), so they can't be all bad!

NB The Advent was priced in the magazine as £450, but with the help of these forums and discount codes from HotdealsUK, I got one for about £370 including Quidco from Curry's online. :D

Shame it's a refurb, obviously that's why its that much cheaper, and also no Vista
(Yes I know some will say thank goodness, but I still think that at some point you have to get Vista, it may as well be for free as bundled with your machine, rather than shelling out in 12 months time)

  • I like the fact that its a core duo, but I wouldn't buy Packerd Bell. However, I don't mind that there's no Windows Vista on it, its not really a must have from my perspective.

Or £351 delivered with the following e-code, though 1024mb memory.
Change warranty to 90 days CAR. Be aware that all Dell stuff is covered for 12 months though you have to pay carriage after 90 days.

    e code 305-N03153

Looks a great buy, but again, no Vista ! Is it worth buying a new notebook now without it?

Why do you absolutely want Vista? What does it offer to you that XP doesn't?
I have a PC which would be able to run Vista but stay with XP: it works very well, in fact it's the most rock solid Windows I ever used with 98SE.
If you desperately want the Vista look (not that it will make you more productive), get a hacked uxtheme.dll and install the unsigned "Vista CG" theme for Windows XP.
