Before installing it on a partition try a 'live cd' version of something like Knoppix, download, burn it to CD as an iso then boot from it for the Linux experience.
OR
Follow the instructions below and run it inside windows using VMWare, I like this option because it piggybacks windows and uses the wireless connection from windows to access the net, good if your Linux version doesn't support your wifi card. I found Puppy Linux worked best under VMWare.

Depends if you want a reflective screen or not. For DVD watching in a dark room I guess it is good. For working with any sun around it can be annoying. I paid for it on my last laptop and was unsure as to whether I made the right choice. I am still unsure. Go and have a look in Currys - a lot of the current laptops have these shiney screens - compare the reflections to a normal old fashioned one.0 -
