Nothing to write home about tbh, Roxio to write CD's and DVD's will be the most useful.

For your free and legal alternatives to software from the big names look at the site below, it has stuff for every need.

Very tempting despite the fact that it is a DELL.
Any advice to tip me over the edge either way???
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • Dell aren't gona be beaten on price. If you buy in a store i.e one of the dixons group, you'll be paying more for less, and a shawdy customer service.
Please don't pm me asking to eat me because you are hungry.

I am NOT a sausage roll.

No advice but, mjr600's post has helped me make up my mind after dithering for ages about which one to get. I went for the 6400.

Thanks from my daughter too mjr600 as I won't keep pinching hers anymore.

bought a packard bell refurb from currys online 3 weeks ago, just as i tried to take off the battery the front panel came apart - wouldnt recommend to anyone. i agree with the previous post about them being flimsy, they just make them look flashy.

luckily currys offer a full refund as its within 28 days.

Those of you who have bought the 6400 have made a great choice. At that price it really is a superbly spec'd laptop.

There are people out there who don't like Dell for varous reasons, I have been buying from them for the past couple of years and found their products well built, well specified at good prices.

Doubts have been raised over their customer service, but again I have had no issues with this. A 27" LCD tv/monitor went fizz at 11 months, within 24 hrs they had collected it and replaced it with the latest 32" for no extra cost !

They also have a very good forum, US based and monitored by Dell staff, if you have any issues or questions you will often get a swift response and I am aware that on those occasions that UK customers have had problems that they do not feel have been properly resolved the Dell administrator have contacted Dell UK and a specific individual has been assigned to sort the problem out. You don't get that kind of service from Dixons etc.

    The forum is here..

Dell products also come with a service tag number which allows you for check for software updates, spec and your individual warranty details online. In addition because you have reduced the warranty to minimum Dell will contact you at some point during the first year to offer you an extended warranty. The deal they will offer will be discounted and much less than you would have paid had you bought it when first ordered, a great deal if you want the warranty extending.

All in all my experience is that Dell are now a great company to deal with, they'll be even better when they finally offer Ubuntu Linux as a free alternative to Windows and the prices fall further.

A bit off topic here but I thought those of you with experience may be able to answer. Now that I am waiting for the laptop to be delivered is there a way of installing Linux on a partition on this particular laptop or will it suffer with major hardware incompatibility issues?
If possible, then any recommendations for websites that offer clear step by step guidance to someone who knows nothing about linux like myself. Thanks again to all of you for the help.
