Apart from the generic advice here phil, without details of your uni, department and disability we cannot help you anymore than we already have.

What sort of problems? Be as specific as feels comfortable for you, although the more specific you are the more advice people can give. PM me if you prefer.

I am just slow at reading and dont take it in when that is vital on a high reading volume course.

I am slow at writing compared to others in exams, my spelling is rubbish which compounds that as i have a limited ability to express myself in exams.

They are not problems that I can say result from the fact I happened to get brain damage at birth and that gave me a mobility disability. So there is no help open to me as I can not say my problems are due to being disabled.

This thread was relatively helpful, until Lusignan came along and started spouting abuse.

Yes, Phil goes on about the same thing time and time again. But he is asking for help.

As with ANYBODY on this board, if you don't have anything helpful to say, then don't say it.

i think that's harsh - a lot of people on here are involved in universities at various levels and so know what kind of support is offered. when it's clear that someone is complaining having not even managed to ask for it in the first place, and therefore is giving the impression to people that universities disadvantage those with disabilities, then yes, we bite back!

and i really don't think phil wants help - if he did, he'd have listened to the months and months of helpful advice that lots of us have tried to give. he is frustrated - at his disability, at his course, at his uni - and wants an outlet - which is all well and good, but some kind of wake up call to reality is well overdue. indulging him isn't going to make any difference if the last 6 months are anything to go by. if i knew any student who wasted as much time on the internet as he does and then complained about finding work hard, i would remove their modem! finals are around the corner and the best route possible involves less whinging and more working.

Them problems probably do come down to my disability but because I was able to hide them before due to having a natural ability at school, I have no evidence to say that these problems are linked to being disabled. However, they are problems I have had all my school life but I was able to hide them there.

There is one simple reason why spend time here because I am able to post on a forum, but I am not able enough to do my course even though I attempt to kid myself that I can do it.

  • Have you been tested for dyslexia? The three problems you've listed are possible indicators.

If you have been or get tested for dyslexia and are found not to be, then your university has no responsibility to give you any extra support for your difficulties. People have natural differences in abilities, and a line has to be drawn somewhere to say whether something is a disability, or just less ability than others.

I do sympathise - I get support for disabilities, completely unrelated to my reading difficulties and slow writing. So while I can get certain allowances, I'm still getting low marks because I have difficulty remembering things I've read and write slowly in exams.

I would suggest that you get tested for dyslexia if you haven't been already, if the results sya that you're not dyslexic, and you believe that your study difficulties are related to your brain damage, then you should discuss this with a medical professional.

In the meantime, your uni might have people to help with study skills (this is nothing to do with disabilities), who will discuss and try out different study methods with you to try and help you cope with your difficulties.

Thanks, I do have cerebral lobe damage so it is more likely I have have things like Dyslexia. I should get tested but I really do not like the idea of anymore labels.

I think maybe study skills are a problem in that all the things I use like PPT and Mindmaps dont fit with a very wordy subject.

It is always a problem if you do not fit neatly into a box!!

  • I know labels are no fun, but they're really essential if you want to get support. Otherwise, everyone would be entitled to support, and then the people who needed the support in the first place would be disadvantaged again. If you always use mind maps, that's another factor to suggest that you're dyslexic. To see if you're dyslexic, they'll test your ability at certain tasks, and compare that ability with your verbal IQ (which is supposed to show your natural level of ability). If there's a big enough difference, then you'll be diagnosed as dyslexic, and that's all the label means - that you're not as good at reading and writing as you are at thinking. It's really not a negative label (compared to some labels, it's a compliment!)

So your here telling us you have written and spoken to all these people yet you still haven't been tested!?

You are either lying about speaking to these people or they have tried to help you and you have refused! Either way no one can help you until you have been tested

Dyslexia has never come up on the cards with anyone I have spoken to.
I am rather skilled at hiding my weaknesses which does mean they do not tend to notice them.

What reason is there for Dyslexia to be an issue in locked doors anyway?

My lecturers know nothing about disabilities so when I have talked to them about my study problems they are not going to think in disability terms.

When I have told disability support aboutmy study problems they have always passed me back to lecturers
