I hope you dont mind me asking, but what is your parents joint income? Just to work out how much support you will get.
Dont worry, we all get through it. There are just certain things you need to work on. Oh Oldernotwiser why are you on the student board when your moaning about them? If you dont like our attitudes then dont come on this board
And seeing as were discussing subjects Im on a design degree and its definately not easy. People seem convinced its a slack subject!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
eri'm not gonna disclose but it means i get the lowest matainance loan.
i'm just refusing to take their money to support me, they have other children, a pension and a morgage (sp?). it just dosen't seem fair i rely on them. my dad didn't get a job until the early nineties (cause there really were no jobs in the 1980's) so its all happening now
which is why i don't want parental support.
i found i can get a grant for being vegetarian around £100 per year which be nice

As far as I can tell people with lower income backgrounds love debt. Why are there so many adverts for loans on ITV?
Why does the whole world have chips on their shoulders these days?!
I was agreeing with most of your points, until I came across this filth.
Poorer people:
A) Do not "love" debt, but if you are from a lower income background, and wish to continue into further education, it is a sad fact of life.
Do not watch ITV necessarily. Maybe you might find us watching BBC4, or maybe even at the theatre, or at the cinema. Maybe, (horror of horrors!) we may read books and sod the telly altogether.
Coming from a privileged background (which it sounds like you do) is nothing to be ashamed of, however, being a condescending, arrogant fool is.
Also I find the idea that poor people all attend polytechnics a little bit baffling - have they invented a wormhole in time back to the 16th century, as your attitude seems more in keeping with those times.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. This is a forum, not a chat room. As many people come here for information and advice, it's probably a good idea if some people here aren't currently students and actually know what they're talking about.
Students come in all ages, attitudes and backgrounds so there's not much point talking about "our attitudes" when you only mean the attitudes of yourself and your friends. You may live in a student ghetto (perhaps you don't) but there's no reason why this forum should be one.
If you were ever to look at other boards, take the Benefits board as an example, you would find that not everyone who posts there is on benefits; several people work for the DHSS or Jobcentre Plus and they are able to give expert advice. If you just want to chat to other students, I suggest you go down the Union bar.

you think i give a damn about spelling and grammar on a internet forum? i've been to a few media classes cause my friends take it. I don't call watching Xena (sp?) the warrior princess exactly challenging. ( i take maths physics and history in comparison) anyway who made you the grammar police?

seriously thats all they do in my school is watch TV. i would much rather do that for 7 hours hours a week then maths but at the end of the day i want a degree that people (like me) won't laugh at (yes i am a snob about media studies and admit to it willingly)0 -

i porbably would take money from my parents if i were in that position i hadn't really thought about what i was writing.
:embarasse
yeah i agree with you, sorry
I don't agree with that. I think that if students are paying between £3k -£4k a year tuition fees and not all of that goes to the lecturers then the financial contingency funds perhaps come in part from those fees. I wouldn't like to take money from my parents as there has to come a point where financially students are not so much their parents' responsibility and the hardship funds are there to be used (for deserving people).0 -
Spelling and grammar do matter on internet forums. People reading forums want to be able to engage quickly with the content of posts and this is made difficult if poor spelling and grammar reduce the clarity of expression. In a written medium like an internet forum miscommunications can easily result in offence or arguments. Also, people posting on internet forums are inviting responses from others and it is considered courteous to them to take the time to word your posts properly. This explains the strong etiquette prohibiting the use of caps and text-speak.0

Can't you spot a joke when you see one?
I still don't see why a debt that you pay off after graduating and not until you're earning £15k should be relevant to your parents' income.
Is it also unfair that kids from more well off backgrounds might get bought cars for their 17th birthday, or go on 3 holidays a year? Should we subsidise cars for poor people?
Is it unfair that we don't all have the exact same parents and exact same upbringing? Maybe we should never see our parents and all go to a state run boarding school, just in case our parents might want to do the best they can for us?
I hope in the future that the fees reflect the cost of providing the course, it might make students think twice about throwing away three years on something completely useless.0 -
Well if you don't want to take your parents money then get a job.
The debt you only pay when you are earning and even then it is not that much each month.Student MoneySaving Club member 017!0
