Do you tell guests what they are having?

I only asked for dietary requirements and it was up to the person to tell me if the couldn't have/didn't like something. I had a few people tell me that they didn't like red meat so I gave them the veggie option.
For the menu choice, I chose duck because it was the nicest at the tasting meal and I don't think I should have to have boring chicken because people are picky (I used to be picky and had to make do with what people gave me).
Have what you want not what you think people want you to have
I disagree! We can go out for nice meals any time we want and eat stuff we like....we will only be feeding 80 of our favourite people once in our lives so I'll want to pick something that as many people as possible would be happy with.0 -
We are going to a wedding on Sunday my grandson and we got a menu with 4 choices of each course to choose from.. which we indicated on our RSVP... so everyone is catered for..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Don't think there'd be much use them eating beforehand if the ceremony's at 1 and then they're there for the duration!
But this is the reason we will be going for the 'safest' options for our meal - probably soup, chicken and something chocolatey, or something. This wouldn't be our first choice by any means but we want to pick something that as many guests as possible will be happy eating, so no one goes hungry.
Bit confused by your first statement re. timings of meals - So would you expect someone not to eat at all (I mean if they go to an event where they can't or wont eat the food)?
As a diabetic (and for many other people) eating decent meals at regular times is important so if I had to make special arrangements to eat before attending I would.
Normally I have a light lunch (between 12pm to 3pm at the very, very latest) and full meal in the evening. If necessary I'd swap this round, or even have a cooked breakfast and then 2 lighter meals if I knew I wasn't going to have the opportunity to eat a normal cooked meal in the evening.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -

Why are you confused? Isn't that pretty normal timings for weddings?
I'd expect people to tell us if they had allergies or something but otherwise if they were too fussy to eat the food, they wouldn't really have another option to eat anything as they'd have been at the wedding since 1pm.... Which is why, as I've said, we'll be going for something that's likely to please as many people as possible.0 -
It's hard to please everyone though! You could have veg soup, chicken and vanilla ice cream, but half the guests would moan and call it boring! You cannot win lol.7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs

Yeah but at least they'd eat it even if it was boring - rather than it being something like red meat or duck that some people 'don't eat'...no one would go hungry, anyway!0 -

Everyone I know is pretty anti-chicken, it's sooo dry too, especially when you're cooking for 100. Lamb will stay moist.
But it's each to their own. Someone will always complain regardless! :rotfl:7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs

What about people who hate chicken?
I've never come across someone who 'hates' chicken...not like people who just 'do not' eat something like red meat... Chicken is probably my least favourite meat too as it's just dull but it's pretty inoffensive! You can't cater to every single person's dislikes but you can avoid things that generally it's not uncommon for people to dislike - such as lamb or duck.
Not that I'm necessarily having chicken...haven't even seen the menu options yet...but just using it as an example!0
