Do you tell guests what they are having?

We've decided that we are going to pick the main course and dessert (we're leaning towards roast topside of beef with yorkshire pudding and black forest gateaux) because I really can't be chewed with them changing their mind once they get to the carvery and then someone not getting what they actually wanted.
I'm not sure if anyone is a vegetarian, that being said I'm sure between OH and I we could find out since we're only having 80 guests.

Loads of people who are not vegetarian wont eat red meat. Maybe worth asking that too when you find out who is a veggie?Herman - MP for all!0

Chicken or Turkey is a much safer option, as lots of people who are not veggies only eat fish or poultry.
EDIT: sorry to complicate things further, but you might want to add a simple fruit salad to the desserts for the diabetics / dairy free / gluten free / weight loss people.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
If you really want the beef, have the beef. You can spend so long trying to work out what everyone will like that you end up with something bland and boring just in case someone doesn't like this ingredient, that meat, this sauce, etc.
We're having pork for our main, obviously with another option for vegetarians. It was the one that most appealed to us out of the menu we were given, was within budget, and tasted amazing at the meal taster session we had. I have since found out that my BiL doesn't really like pork. Oh well, he can eat what he wants and leave the rest. There'll be a buffet in the evening too so he can fill up there!
ETA: I agree with the above idea of adding a fruit salad to the desserts; we have two coeliacs in our guest list and have chosen a dessert that they can have. Most people trying to lose weight (at least, the sensible ones) will allow themselves a little treat at a wedding though so don't over-analyse how much you will need!Marrying my lovely man on 1st September 2012

We gave our guests a choice (but there is only 16 of is eating) but we went to a wedding recently where we didnt know the menu in advance. It is your choice. My only issue with beef is good chefs like to leave it pink and i wouldnt touch it then but that's my personal choice£2 Savers Club for 2022 #120

I would just offer 2 choices: meat or veggie. Some meat eaters will go for a veggie option, but don't worry about people not liking it etc- you can't make everyone happy!:T0

It's only 10.30 in the morning and I really want roast beef and yorkshire pudding.
With mash AND roasters. And carrots and gravy and brocolli.
Cheers OP. You've put me right off my boring toast now.
( I do think chicken is a safer bet though.)Herman - MP for all!0 -
It's nice to know what you're having when you're a guest but not the be all and end all. At our wedding we had sausage n mash or vegetable risotto with profiterole for pud. We chose these as they're our favourite foods - you will never please everyone!
One wedding we went for recently weren't telling before the day and only wanted to know if you wanted vegetarian or not! It was gorgeous but I was worried in case I would of hated it!Spreading a little Christmas joy all year round :santa2:0 -
We chose chicken,as were only having 40 day guests i just asked them if they would eat what we chose, only one wont eat chicken which is FIL so he is having the salmon,OH wont eat a roast anyway so the hotel have catered to what he will have and only OH and my nephews partner wont have veggie soup so they are having tomatoe.Best thing to do is just ask your guests if they will eat it and if not give them the option of something else off the menu0

We have chose to have the traditional menu.
Starter: Vegetable Soup
Main: Turkey & Ham with all the trimmings
Dessert: Trio of desserts
We found that this would be the main fav's at any wedding therefore we decided to go with this. People are there for your day and should be thankful for the dinner that you are kindly paying for. If they dont like it, tuff!
We will include a little option for vegetarians or special requirements but overall, thats our set menu.0 -
I have never been to a wedding where I knew in advance what I would be eating!
We're having about 80 guests as well, and there is no way we would have the time to go to every guest to ask whether the meal we chose was OK with them and would they prefer something else. If you only have 40 guests it might be workable, but you have to take into account the extra work for the caterers and whether they would charge extra for multiple dishes. Our caterers have not given us the option of choosing anything other than a meat and a vegetarian dish, other dietary requirements notwithstanding.Marrying my lovely man on 1st September 2012
