How strange. Apart from one wedding in 2011 which was a buffet meal, I have never been to a wedding (as an adult) where I haven't been asked what I wanted to eat. That's why it felt completely natural for me to ask my guests which they prefered I suppose.

I've been to weddings where there is a choice, but never been told in advance what the menu is! Just found out on the day.

We are having a choice but it's different as we are marrying in Rhodes & it's normal there. We have meze for starter to be shared between 4 people & there is about 6 different things on it & then for mains 3 meat dishes, 1 fish & a veggi option. Everyone gets ice cream for pudding:D

    Sounds yummy!!!

I'm another who has never known before the wedding what the food is.

I had never been to a wedding where we knew the menu in advance, however for ours we have included the menu in with the invites with the veggie option on the reverse. This is because we are having beef for the main and I know some people can be funny about red meat or it being too pink (I was like this a few years ago!). I've already had some meat eaters opt for the veggie option.

I hate really don't much like roast beef and especially hate Yorkshire pudding, really dislike black forest gateaux too. :(

The only reason I'm chipping in with this is that if I arrived at your wedding and was faced with it, not only would I be very hungry (not good as I'm diabetic) I'd also feel terrible that you had spent/wasted your money (and we all know wedding catering is expensive) on something I couldn't/wouldn't eat. :(

While I wouldn't expect you to choose something different on my behalf (though generally if there was a veggie option I'd most likely enjoy it) I think a heads up in advance is important (and only polite) if you are catering and only have one option.

We had afternoon tea and mentioned on our invites so people know it wasn't going to be a cooked hot meal.

I've been to weddings with all sorts of catering options, but don't recall going to any where there was only one meal option, presented on the day/not mentioned in advance.

But what's the point in telling them what they're going to be eating if there is only one option...? I don't get it!

I think it's so that they can choose the vege option if they'd rather have that. We're planning to choose one meat menu and one vege menu, tell people on the invites what both are, and then ask for number of meat meals and number of vege meals required on each rsvp :)

We are having Pie and Peas, Cheese/onion Pie or Lasagne for Mains with Veggie Soup or Pate for Starters. The Venue suggested it this way and they will have a table plan with poeople choices on it - so the waiters know who is having what. There was a kids menu but so far most of the kids have opted for the adult food over chicken/fish nuggets and chips!!

I only asked for dietary requirements and it was up to the person to tell me if the couldn't have/didn't like something. I had a few people tell me that they didn't like red meat so I gave them the veggie option.

For the menu choice, I chose duck because it was the nicest at the tasting meal and I don't think I should have to have boring chicken because people are picky (I used to be picky and had to make do with what people gave me).

Don't think there'd be much use them eating beforehand if the ceremony's at 1 and then they're there for the duration!

But this is the reason we will be going for the 'safest' options for our meal - probably soup, chicken and something chocolatey, or something. This wouldn't be our first choice by any means but we want to pick something that as many guests as possible will be happy eating, so no one goes hungry.
