I make porridge with water and then stir in a yoghurt and then bung back in microwave for 15 seconds to take the chill off. Lovely and creamy.

Looking for ideas for healthy breakfasts, that are quick to make and of course not expensive!
I love porridge, but only when its made with milk and with a spoonful of golden syrup on top which suddenly makes it not very healthy/high in calories!

I need to start eating good breakfasts ...

I love porridge like this too, though I try to resist. :o My compromise is to have half milk half water, no sugar or syrup, a tablespoonful of raisins (mixed in with the milk/water as it's made in the microwave so they absorb it) and half a teaspoonful of cinnamon on top. Cinnamon is supposed to be terrifically good for you (antioxidants or something) and Aldi's is cheap at only 49p-ish. The raisins obviously do raise the calories but they also add one of the five-a-day.

  • Shreddies are good too, though not as cheap as they might be, so I rarely buy them. Has anyone tried Aldi's lookalike version which is under 90p? I'm thinking of giving them a try.

Just thinking about the milk aspect.....not sure why milk is unhealthy if there is no into
Race to it. Syrup sure, but the milk? Op, you could always swap to skimmed milk.
  • My DD hated milk and cereal when she was younger and I gave her Pasta and tomato sauce for breakfast most days, as she very carefully explained to me that pasta was certainly cereal and tomatoes were fruit weren't they? I cooked the pasta the day before and reheated it in the microwave in the sauce. She even pointed out that if I gave her some grated cheese on top that was milk wasn't it? I don't know who won to this day!!

    Beans on toast, wholemeal bread.

    I love beans on toast.:T

Porridge is very filling and healthy if you top with fresh/dried fruit and a few nuts but I don't fancy it most mornings.:p

I have a big bowl of cereal, a couple of Weetabix but then add a spoon of porridge; bran flakes; wheatgerm and to save adding sugar i throw in some mixed dried fruit.

  • I guess it depends on what you class as healthy and what you are eating for the rest of the day. I don't see why lowfat milk in your porridge would be a problem, but if you want to cut calories, half water/half milk is a good compromise. If I put in enough flavour I don't notice. I like to add a drop of vanilla or a bit of cinnamon. Sometimes I chop up an apple (don't bother to peel, takes longer and the peel is quite healthy!) or, I stir in some frozen berries. I either get a cheap sm own blend of berries or freeze my own when they're cheap in summer. I do add sugar, although I'm trying to cut back! If I want to make it stick with me longer to avoid snacking, I'll add a spoon of peanut butter. Yes, it does add fat and calories but it also adds protein, and with that stirred in I don't mind cutting my sugar ration in half;). This usually means I don't eat again until lunch, which might help you more in the long run if you are looking to cut calories.

For alternatives, try a scrambled egg with chopped peppers and spring onions (I'd chop once and keep in a box for the week to make it faster), home made smoothies, home-made granola (the bought stuff can be high in sugar and fat!) with low fat greek yoghurt and fruit, or a no sugar added cold cereal if you can bear it! Hardboiled eggs with a bit of toast might be good if you're on the go, softboiled if you've got a taste for them.

I find that if I make sure I get protein at breakfast I'm much less likely to snack throughout the day so while my breakfast might be more substantial, overall it makes for a healthier day.
