Right - off to look at that website.

Could possibly do the cooked recipe with veggie sausages (as I dont eat meat)

I soak my porridge oats overnight to make them more digestible now - but think I might try not cooking them tomorrow and chuck fruit in.

The more ideas the better - keep 'em coming!

(Hmm - just gone to that website - right apple and bulgur breakfast noted straight off - going back for another look)

since neither of us have time constraints we try to make breakfast a good meal, so we usually have one of the following:
    • plum tomatoes on toast / baked beans on toast / plain scrambled egg on toast / cooked garlic mushrooms on toast / sardines from the tin on toast
    • once a week, bacon and egg butties
    • occasionally, special scrambled egg (before the egg goes in the butter, i cook down bacon or ham bits from aldi, and in the raw egg, i also mix in mixed herbs/chilli flakes, then before its served, add a little soy sauce, its great) on toast
    • soft boiled egg and ryvitas
    • soft boiled egg, peeled, and nestled in a pile of beans on toast (so when you cut it open the yolk goes all over the beans - yum with tomato ketchup as well)
    • porridge (me only. i tend to cook the oats in the microwave with skimmed milk, add brown sugar or syrup, with mixed spice and sultanas)
    • cheese and ham toasties
    • toast with jam of some kind
    • fruit and fibre cereal
    • yoghurt with some kind of fruit, like melon, when its on special
Someone mentioned dutch breakfasts: my OH is dutch so i've had many a dutch breakfast. A standard breakfast there (a non rushed one that is) could be some good bread (flavoursome, not plastic bread, rye bread or wholemeal seeded), some Fillet American (which is kind of like a pate in texture but its raw steak whizzed with other stuff, its not available in the UK but its absolutely fantastic), various kinds of cold meat, various kinds of cheese, good strong coffee (a survival mechanism in my OH's family i think), butter and.. well.. sprinkles. the hundreds and thousand type sprinkles. They butter the bread and sprinkle the sprinkles on.. and eat it. Usually not all at the same time, i hasten to add, and of course, in these days of commuting and so on many dutch people do the toast-coffee or cereal-coffee and run out the door, and of course personal preferances come into it too. But there's some ideas.

and ... ack!!! just saw the reply where you said you're a vegetarian! sorry hon. I'll leave the meat ideas up there anyway, for others if they're interested. :) you could try a recipe for huevos rancheros as well, i think there are some vegetarian options for that around.

  • I like tinned mackerel on toast sometimes, though I admit that I don't eat breakfast very often. Malt loaf is good too.

O/T - lynzpower, I must have looked at your avatar hundreds of times, and have always seen a woman holding one of those cameras with a long lense, poised as if about to shoot. I've even looked at it closely because I've wondered why :) Just glancing at it now I saw immediately that she was actually holding a bunch of pound notes. Could this be evidence that home-made hob-nobs improve eyesight - yet another benefit? You never know :)
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
  • DS loves a cooked breakfast on a Sunday morning. It can be a challenge trying to find something tasty, yet cheap. He loves the full Scottish, but because we are both diabetics, that isn't good for us. I keep looking for good ideas for a cooked breakfast for Sunday.

  • Hi

Eggs dont go down too well and have to be careful with dairy  its a real pain! I do have the odd scrambled egg but literally just a couple of mouthfuls.

    Thanks

My Bro can't have milk, so he soaks his (non-dairy)muesli in apple juice overnight. I suppose you could use something else (prune juice would be nice but might be a bit much for lower tummies to handle)

Oh I love this thread as I'm constantly on the hunt for new things to feed my family for breakfast. We do have the more complicated or time consuming brekkies of fry-ups,waffles or pancakes at weekends. But during the week we tend to go for cinnamon toast,HM currant toast, tried chocolate bread last week on the kids and they loved it,sometimes make poached eggs or beans on toast

  • Porridge: cheap, filling and healthy. :-)

I like oats with grated apple, chopped hazelnuts and honey, sometimes a tiny bit of cinnamon too. (Not very traditional, but tastes good!) Chopped dates is a nice alternative or sliced bananas and honey. Equal measures of oats and water/ milk and water, bit of salt, bring to boil, simmer 3 minutes and job done - I don't use the microwave as it tends to either turn to concrete (not enough liquid) or turn into a volcano and erupt - big mess!

In summer I just use oats as a muesli base, add chopped mixed nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, dried fruit (2 or 3 from: Cranberries, cherries, pineapple or mango, apricots, apple, dates, etc), sometimes puffed oats or puffed rice to bulk it out and add texture, served with cold milk and sliced banana or grated apple.

fruit smoothies are good, quick and easy (you can get 3 portions of fruit into a glass, if time is not allowing for this a yoguht and an apple and bannana is a good filling start.
