Homemade granola is cheap and easy to make as well as being delicious.

This is a good recipe, it is American so uses cups- get a cup that holds about 8 fl oz of liquid.

    3 cups oats
    1 cup wheatgerm
    1 cup sunflower seeds
    1 cup desiccated coconut
1 cup chopped nuts or pumpkin seeds

Put in a large baking tin/dish

    combine

    1/2 cup honey or syrup
    1/2 cup vegetable oil

Pour over dry ingredients, mix well and bake at 150c for 30-60 mins, stirring frequently.Don't let it get too brown.Allow to cool.

    Stir in ,as desired
    raisins
    dried apricots
    dates
    sultanas

    Store in an airtight container.

Munchy seeds make a good snack.

In winter, porridge (made with water - can't stand milk), sweetened with a puree made of cooked dried apricots. The puree can be made in bulk and stored in a big jar in the fridge.
In summer - home made muesli mixed up with plain yoghurt.
Also a piece of fruit - in winter an orange, in summer whatever is ripe in the garden.

  • 1 scoop of porridge, 2 scoops of milk. Pinch of cinnamon - helps balance blood sugar so helps with cravings. Cook for 45 secs on high, stir, 60 secs.
Things to add: raw or cooked: sultannas, apple, dates. Raw, ie after cooking, banana.
You can save time by putting mixture in fridge the night before - helps plump up raisins etc but might need to add extra milk. Can use soya/goats milk etc. Have yogurt as snack later.

I don't usually like sweet food at breakfast time, and I hate porridge made with salt. My breakfast regulars are baked beans on toast, fried egg and bread, vegemite, cheese and bread or crispbread and mushrooms on toast (dh hates mushrooms so this is my best chance to get them). I'm not usually in a hurry, which helps.

Asda's own brand Bran Flakes with some skimmed milk and no sugar followed by a cup of decaff coffee - sorts me out for the morning! If I'm feeling peckish around 10.30 - 11.00 then I'll have two slices of toast!

I'm a bit of a breakfast avoider especially at weekends -bad, bad I know. However this is my breakfast list for the kids which operates in term time. In the holidays/weekends they help themselves to toast/bread or occasionally value branflakes.

    Homemade granola
porridge with golden syrup on (the most frequent option)
    beans on toast
    scrambled egg and toast
potato cakes and bacon (if there is leftover mash)
    bacon sandwich
American style pancakes and golden syrup (or fruit sauce)
homemade muffins -heavy on fruit and seeds

all served with a glass of orange juice and optional piece of fruit.
  • I had a lighterlife bar and 3 glasses of soda water

The children has porridge with added dried fruit
  • if u fancy a change oatcakes are good, not the scottish variety tho these are more like pancakes. They are called staffordshire oatcakes. so easy and u can fill with what ever u like sweet or savoury, pop filling in, roll up, wrap in kitchen towel cos it keeps them from going dry and zap in the micro for about 40 secs.I eat mine with any of these cheese, marmalade, bacon, scrambled egg, choc spread anything I fancy really. You can buy in shops or make yourself like I do and freeze 2 at a time

I hate making breakfast but love eating it-mum makes mine If i stay over which I do usually and even If I am at my own home I go to mums to have breakfast there as she is only 5min away. It's usually mum dad and myself.
    Our weekly breakfast menu is
Oatcakes with scrambled sweet eggs(eggs with milk and sugar added) delicious !
Toast beans and fried egg. Tea or orange juice
Butter brioche with tea or coffee
    Croissants and bran flakes-Tea
Wholemeal toast, rice krispies and some fruit salad.Tea
Sometimes I can persuade mum to make me a buttery paratha with an enormous mug of tea but that causes a breakfast food fight between myself and my dad who likes to eat my breakfast If I am a little late .
I think breakfast is very important and if I happen to miss it which is very rare then I have a grumpy day.OH has been pre warned that when we get married he will have breakfast duty -I am willing to have him sign a pre nuptial to confirm this.
