If you want to do a balance transfer into a back account you really should 'pretend' its to pay off an overdraft (hence why Barclaycard don't allow it to their own accounts).

Obviously they don't know how much is in your current account and that your are going to stick it into a savings account - but at least pretend to play the game by their rules...

Asking the purpose of the balance transfer may also be justified on 'market research' grounds, of course, but it doesn't stop them scoring you later according to your reply. I suppose you can always lie but why not just 'ask' the operator if they don't do it for themselves - and they might just pass on quickly!  :)

As to the 'may charge a fee' point - that's just a general term & condition on all Barclaycards - they waive it on a specific deal - like the new 0% card - for all customers accepted. :D

The lady I spoke to did say that it was just because she had to go to a different screen if it was to a current account than to a cc.
  • I applied for my 0% card online, as a new customer, on 12th June. Phoned yesterday to see what was happening only to be told that they were sending me a paer application form & they could not make a decision until I had completed that.

    WHY???

I can understand that they may need to clarify a few points to satisfy themselves of various things, but surely an online application is just that - an APPLICATION for a product. I would be further forward if I'd not bothered going online in the first place. I suspect they're going to turn me down, but I guess there are plenty of other companies around so I'll have to try some of them. I don;t want to do too much of that, though, or my credit rating will take a huge bash. ???

I suspect it is just that they need a signature in writing. If they intended to turn you down on the information they have, they wouldn't bother with a paper application, they would just reject you. Why should they spend the money to send you a paper application if they are going to turn you down?

Besides, who would turn down Mary Poppins? You're practically perfect in every way, after all. ;D
I have five stars! This doesn't mean that I know anything about any of the things I post. I could be a raving lunatic, or a brilliant genius, or just some guy on the internet. In fact, I could be all three at the same time.

If anything I say makes sense, then do it. If not, don't. Don't blame me or my stars if you do something stupid because I suggested it. I'm responsible for my own stupidity only. You are responsible for yours.

Why, I don't even have five stars anymore! Aren't you glad you aren't responsible for my stupidity?

So I am - I forget that now & again!

Thanks for the reply, DiggingOut, you've put that sweet smile back on my face again! 8)

I feel that as a moderator I should point out that MSE does not advocate lying to credit card issuers.

Sins of omission on the other hand may send you to hell but couldn't ever be construed as fraud...

I suppose that is where the "practically" part of it comes in. If you were completely perfect, you wouldn't forget. ;)

  • Despite my initial cynicism about what seemed a lengthy application process (based on previous experience of 4 years of swopping between 0% cards which took on average less than 10 days to process) I am now delighted with my new Barclaycard.

My request to BT £4,500 was not only agreed but carried out even before I had received my card! I am also delighted with the credit limit which is far from 'measly'.

So I take it all back, this is a great deal and I now have a £4,500 interest free 'loan' for 14 months!

    :D
