What a inspirational video. You can't help but believe anything is possible after watching that. Amazing!
Enjoy the walking!
Evilsquid Have a great time in NY!
WW Thanks for the link.I'm going to have a go at calorie counting. Watched Horizon on BBC2 last night and it uncovered some interesting facts about calorie restriction. Might do what he did and try it for 5 wks with 5 days normal eating and 2 days at 600 cals and see what happens, it seemed to work for him he lost over a stone and his cholesterol, and body fat measurements,( and something else to do with ageing G??,) improved too.
Right off for a walk with doggy, I have my second appt with jobcentre later this morning. After talking to several people am thinking now it's just a waste of time and going through the motions but will attend this one and the next and then make a firm decision but am thinking I'll look for something voluntary myself. I did if you remember register with a couple but haven't yet heard back so I'll go back on the site and have another look with a view to staring after school hols finish.
Have a good day.Frump to Fab - Solstice Sizzler

Good Morning All
Like some of you I'm not sleeping too well at the moment either.
No rhyme or reason that I can see but I agree it's a bit of a b*gger when it happens.
Feeling a bit jittery this morning, had some bad dreams. I must have also slept in a funny position because I feel so stiff.
Did you manage to watch Horizon - about calorie restriction and how it can help ward of western style illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, alzeimhers. Very interesting. I'm definitely going to give it a go because as I mentioned yesterday I don't seem to manage very well with either SW or WW, whereas I did really well when I calorie counted after I had my children.
WW Thanks for link to myfitness pal - it looks as though it will be helpfull.
One thing I've really noticed is just what beautfiul bodies our athletes have. Aren't they wonderful specimens. Now I know I can never aspire to that level of perfection but I can certainly make some improvements. :rotfl:
So I'm really going to try and fit in more exercise as well as counting calories. I really have been terribly lax on the exercise front of late. Stupid really because I agree you really do feel much better when you do exercise regularly. Those endorphins really do help.
Lizzie - good luck with the interview. Like you I have to confess I am extremely sceptical about the value of these work programmes.
I think these programmes are really for people who do not know how to compile a CV or need help with interview techniques or confidence building. I don't think they help educated and experienced people who just so happen to have been made redundant or the like. I could be wrong but if there are no jobs then there are no jobs.
I still think that the days of full employment for life are well and truly over. I have been reading about "Portfolio" working and I think that, even when the economy does pick up, for many that will have to be the future. The old idea of working in the same job or even the same field of work seems to be a thing of the past, there is no such thing as job security now.
New York - definitely on my to do list.0 -
Morning all,
Just trying to catch up on you all so just a quick one - but people seem to be doing very well with the exercise (well done on signing up for the 10k WW, am sure you will manage it!). Evilsquid - have a wonderful time in NY, am very jealous
Had my family stopping this weekend, was really nice to see them but the diet definately went out the windowThen had a day off work yesterday - well off the day job at least, was taking photos of a friend's act busking in the fringe, then covering a wedding, dropping some photos off from the last one then home and editing for the rest of the night. Was a bit of a late one and am feeling it this morning I must admit. Have choir tonight as well so hope I perk up a bit by then. We're doing a song for the opening of the Paralympics up here with a deaf choir and think they're coming along to our rehearsal tonight to practice it. OH has been manically busy, they went out looking for 'famous' people at the festival and ended up meeting a quite famous comedian who's asked them to film some shows he's doing and has got them in with a radio station so they're now down there every day filming the guests they have on and doing their own interviews when the station has finished. Is quite exciting
I'm off on Friday (was meant to have another wedding but she's cancelled on me!) so might go down to help out then.
Hope everyone has a good day x0 -

WW did I read your 10k is in Cardiff or I misread it?
Yes its in Cardiff around St Davids Day.
Just back from my run and I used www.walkjogrun.net to map a run out of 4K and guess what.... I ran the whole way in pouring rain:j:j:j. Felt tired towards the end but kept going and made it home, think if I'd pushed it I could have done a little bit more. It took about 27 mins so not too bad - need to work on my speed a bit once I get to the magical 5K. Hoping that won't be too long now. I have the 5K "race" on Sept 2nd so should be able to manage it by then.
The Couch to 5K really helped me to get started but I'm sort of doing my own thing now - if I was following the plan I'm at week 8 standard now - my goal was to get there by the end of the summer holidays so I'm ahead of schedule:T
EvilSquid - yes it was Unicorn vegan/veggie store, and yes I did get the chickpea sticks - all scoffed on the same day (good job I got the little bag!), will go again soon to stock up. Hope NYC is still going well.
Right, need a bath now after my little triumph - it was actually a bit easier in the rain, think it keeps you cooler.
Hope everyone's fabbing goes well today - think about how far we've come ladies and where we'd be if we hadn't started to make an effort even if its little steps at a time. We all deserve a big pat on the back.:)0 -
I don't know what it is but I'm acutally enjoying the challenge of doing the exercise and healthy eating, I will show my mother I can do it. She did really rattle me somewhat.
That's the spirit Hewie:T Keep posting your achievements on here, we're behind you all the way. Are you doing the calorie counting too?
I, too, was afflicted with the insomnia bug last night. It took me an age to get off to sleep, slept fitfully and woke countless times.:( I've also been very lazy with my walking.
You seems so busy pod but happy with it. And really good that OH has something interesting to do, hopefully it'll help him feel good about himself.
I need to set myself some goals as I'm feeling very under employed at the moment. I can't exactly put my finger on why but I'm sure the poor weather has something to do with it. I feel we're creeping towards September (autumn stuff in shops , garden's been a real disappointment) and we haven't had a summer yet. I think a bit of decluttering is probably the answer. I need to acheive something!! Sorry to be miserable.0 -
Sorry if I'm being a bit thick
but.......
To those who watched the Horizon programme, can you just clarify a couple of things - I must have been half asleep when I watched it.
Re the five day/2 day mini fast thing.
Re the 5 day just eating a good and healthy diet. Was that 2000 calories for men or for men and women, should women reduce their intake on the 5 day part too.
Re the 2 day mini fast - am I right in that it has to be 2 consecutive days.
Also re the 2 days at around 600 cals - he mentioned 1 meal. Does that mean you have to have all 600 cals at one sitting or could you split it say 200 for a late breakfast and 400 for a light supper. That would suit me better than trying 600 all at once.
I've tried googling but can't find the info.
Just back from seeing OH. GP prescribed mega dose of steroids, obviously trying to avoid the surgical route.
Going to have a little rest and then a potter round the garden. I really feel desperately tired today. I guess it's just worry about OH but I do feel a bit low at the moment.
I do so agree Maman , don't think you are being miserable at all. It does feel like autumn is just around the corner and yet summer hasn't even got going yet. I'm sure our spirits would lift if we had a bit of sun.
I might manage a trip to Devon soon, and possibly a few days visiting friends in Scarborough but one thing is for sure - I am definitely going to try and have a winter sun holiday this year.
It's been over 6 years since I had a proper holiday - I'm ready.;)0 -
I only saw the second half of the programme but as far as I could gather the 2 fast days didn't need to be together - the presenter said that his were often crowbarred into the week where he could manage them. Also, I think the 600 cals can be divided up over the day, he just chose to have a big breakfast before work. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not sure about the cal intake on the other 5 days. Perhaps you could watch the show again on the iPlayer to clarify? Let us know if you do as I thought it was interesting but don't think I could manage on 600 cals a day with facing a classroom of kids all day or exercising on the weekends. I'll stick to my 1200:o.
On the subject of the weather - its supposed to improve tomorrow - we can live in hope!0 -
Thanks WW
I was thinking of starting at say 1800 cals for 5 days and then 600 for 2 days, but as you say splitting the 600 cals over two light meals. I don't fancy "gorging" - if one can gorge on 600 calls:rotfl: and then starving for the rest of the day.
When I lost my weight after having the children I did it on 2000 cals but I was breastfeeding, and you need to allow 500 cals for producing breast milk (I make it sound delightful like milking a cow:rotfl:). I found the 2000 cals an absolute doddle - you can eat very well on that.
If the 5/2 thing doesn't work then I will start at 1500 cals and work down as required.
Years ago when I was in my twenties the thinking was that to lose weight you had to go down to 1000 cals - it was awful - I was starving half the time. I think 1200 might be a bit easier to do, but ideally I would like to lose 3 stones so will just try the higher amounts first.
Someone at the door - bye0
