As said above, things seem to be sorting out now.

Everything seems to be there, even the cheques paid in the other day have now appeared, but not cleared yet. At least nothing seems to be missing.

Fingers crossed, that will be that.

Seems they've addressed their front line account services but have yet to do anything with their mortgage system.

Going to cost me a small fortune

Surely you should be waiting until tomorrow morning before deciding that there is no physical way of you getting hold of money to pay for the petrol?

It's times like this where the usual advice of not relying on one bank to look after every penny of your finances should be re-emphasised! Even if it's just a credit card from Vanquis etc. (lenders who will give out low-limit credit cards to just about anyone) in the drawer for emergencies. (I don't mean to be rubbing it in with an "I told you so"! Just advice for the future).

While I sympathise with the annoyance - are you seriously suggesting that your cupboards, fridge and freezer are all completely empty, and you're unable to gather £2/3 between you in change from everyone in the house?
Who cares whether they can or can't? It's no ones business, certainly not yours.

People should be able to have access to their money when they want to, and even though this was a mistake and not intentional, no one at any bank would be as lenient with us making a mistake and we would still pay for it whether or not we were 'sorry for the inconvenience' and even though we would certainly not put the bank it of pocket over an over night overdraft of 3p.

Children are supposed to have 24oz of milk a day. If someone was out of milk and had 5p to their name, well. Their kids go without their daily needs being met.

That is wrong and unfair to people who cannot take care of themselves.

If I am expecting my wages, I want them on time, period.

I ave had to go and pick courgettes and grate them and mix with flour and egg and fry for dinner before, because we were that skint before when something similar happened, albeit on a much smaller scale.

My daughter broke our huge front window and having the lad out to sort it left me with 5p in my account. Luckily, I had some shopping in, but not everyone would have done the shop on the day I had, AND THIS HAS ACTUALLY GONE ON SINCE WEDNESDAY MORNING so for many it has been 2 days, not one.

Not to mention disabled folks who have to budget very carefull and rely on groceries being delivered on a set day.

All the pennies in all the couches in the world doesn't make up for these kinds of things.

So what if I can space up a pound for milk? I also happen to want my kids to have veg, fruit and grains in the day. As is their right.

My cheque, paid in on Monday, isn't there as yet.

Even stranger the two debit card payments to Barclaycard are shown on the first page mini-statement as having gone through yesterday, but they're not on my main statement whereas today's DDs are.

I guess I'll leave things until tomorrow and hope they settle down.

Firstly I dont agree with some of the "questioning" posts that are starting to appear - it is harder and harder to live these days and if you receive a major hiccup like this it seriously throws people many people live day by day - week by week with their budgets with no "spare" - you cant put the blame on people for not having second bank accounts, emergency food stock, emergency credit card etc
can others not just accept that to some people this has caused problems - you never know when you are going to be in the same position.
(Edit anneatkins our posts crossed and I totally agree with you - you explained it better than I have above -)

Anyway to business - just to update -
I have had a phone call from natwest (Customer Care) - they have apologised for the problem - the money is now in my account but they are very guarded on whether the same problem is going to happen tonight and questioned whether I could take it out / go and get food etc tonight - maybe its just my perception but I did say "what you are trying to say without hanging yourself is that you are not sure whether it wont happen again" - there were no firm reassurances from him that this is all ok.

With regards any compensation etc - he brought the subject up and said that the compensation section he cannot access

he has offered to phone me tomorrow to make sure everything is still ok

I dont think this situation is over ............... but Im in the lap of the gods as I just cant get to bank to withdraw funds and then go shopping etc so i have fingers crossed that the money will still be there tomorrow.

i am actually in shock at the amount of people who run their accounts down to the last penny. There may be a lesson to be learnt here, anyway make sure you have some emergency money tucked away somewhere.

Not sure why you would be shocked. I work and depend on my money coming through. Every penny I earn and I receive is accounted for in bills, food, petrol, insurances and looking after 2 children. etc so at the moment I do not have spare money to put aside as everything is so expensive these days.

If this didn't happen with natwest then we wouldn't have to panic would we. I do my weekly shop on Thursday's,pay my bills, child are etc on this day so if I haven't the money to pay then I'm in serious trouble.

Really hoping this is sorted out as we were due our money today in order to complete (move) on our house purchase tomorrow. If it doesn't come through in the morning, we can't move and neither can the rest of the chain, who are staying in hotels, having removal vans remove furniture today and first thing in the morning. Natwest have given me no advice as to if we will be awarded compensation if this is the case and the rest of the chain are getting understandably very antsy about this.

I understand that glitches do happen, but this has been a mighty big one and you'd think that staff would be able to help with questions arising from this with regard to next steps. It's a very tricky situation and doesn't just affect people who can't access their accounts for money (us included, but luckily I always keep a spare few tins of food for disasters!). Gah....

Granted, I believe that people too should have an emergency kitty hidden somewhere, however, sadly some people are not in a position to do that. I usually have a bit of cash around the house for emergencies, but unfortunately spent it yesterday and don't have a penny either! Luckily I don't put all my eggs in one basket and keep a couple of other accounts with a small amount of money - perhaps this is a better idea than going solo with one bank account?

A lot of people (me included) cannot do that. I am living right on the edge at the moment (claiming JSA) and every single penny goes on bills and food.
