but Aqua may treat it differently. Ie, they declined the transaction as it caused your account to go over the limit.

Well I would certainly argue that one with them and take it to the FOS if necessary.
The account did not actually go over the limit at any time.

    I don't agree it's a grey area.
The account never went over the limit.
    Anyway - let's not argue.
If I get hassle I'll be sure to let you know how it goes :-)

Whether they ever let anyone go over the limit is I guess the point relevant to the thread. I can only give my experience.

I had a transaction declined last week when it would have gone over my limit.

Wasn't that a bit careless given we've all got this card for the amazing cashback, and we all know that if you do anything wrong all the cashback is lost.

    Wasn't that a bit careless

I think it would be harsh to say that under the circumstances.

A company cancelled an order due to lack of stock.
They did email me to say the order was cancelled.
I did not know that they had aborted a payment and used my CC details as opposed to not using my card details at all.
Had I known that I still would not have known that this would have left a reservation on my credit card that took 4 days to clear.

I don't think many people would have known or checked those things unless it happened to them before. My assumption was that as they did not have stock and ad cancelled my order that they would not be using my Credit card details in fact I might argue that was unauthorised use.

I think it would be pretty harsh to call that careless, but I'm thankful for the reminder about the need to be ultra careful :-) and obviously I've learnt something that I will know for next time.

The account did NOT go over the limit when another transaction was declined (due to the aditional reservation) so I don't see how the Ts&Cs could apply.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean it in a harsh way, it's just I know you yourself have told several people on this thread about the need to be ultra-careful and ensure you never go over limit or miss a payment. So I was just a little surprised to read that you had already tested what happens when you try to go over limit, and in the first month of having the card too! :)

    No worries.
Yes I agree with you it's important - thanks for the timely reminder :-)
It's just this set of cirumcustances caught me out.
I expected the retailer without the stock would not use my CC details.
I was unaware that they had used the card and I was also unaware that an aborted transaction that never went through would leave a reseveration.
That's hopefully something that we can all learn from.

If anyone wants to call it careless that's ok. I think it's better to learn from it rather than beat myself up over things I couldn't possibly have known.

I am thankful Aqua didn't allow me to go over my limit.

Yes, it would have been annoying to mess up the cashback in the very first month. [:rotfl:]

I had a declined transaction (fraud protection) with an online travel agent. The flights I was trying to book came to about £1200. The main cost (about £1180) with the airline was approved, but the smaller transaction which was the fee for the agent got declined! That meant the actual ticket didn't get issued and I had a "pending" transaction of over a grand on my account for about a week. It is annoying, to say the least. Not least because the tickets had gone up in price by the time I actually managed to book them.

In that case I would be pursuing the company that used my card without authorisation through moneyclaim online for my financial loss of cashback.
I gave them the card details to use in connection with an order.
They should not have used my card if they were not honouring my order.
I think the company messed up but hey others are entitled to their opinions if they want to beat me up for not knowing a company used my card.
This is what courts and judges are for and it's something I would be prepared to pursue in this case.

The important point I think is to be ultra ultra careful especially where declined/aborted transactions have occured EVEN if you don't necessarily know there has been one (as in my case).

I agree. They are not supposed to charge your card until the items have been shipped. If they had no stock, and therefore couldn't ship anything, they should not have attempted to do anything at all with your card details.

Firms would argue that it costs money (customers' money, in the end) to process orders against cards that turn out not to work.

But an authorisation hold isn't a debit and can't take you over the limit. For instance, limit £500, balance £300, plus £150 on hold. If you try to spend a further £100, this may or may not be declined (don't rely on it being declined), but if it goes through, your balance is still only £400 and you aren't over the limit.

Just had my first statement. Direct debit in full set up.

Question though, if I pay some of the outstanding balance off before the direct debit date, do they reduce the direct debit, or still collect the value as per the statement?

Anyone with an Aqua card already got any experience of this?
    Thanks
