I don't think it hurts that much, nowhere near as much as waxing. It's like a sharp 'ping' on your skin (they describe it as like having an elastic band pinged on you). The machine varies in strength as well, and when you have your test patch done they try different strengths to see how much you can handle.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I am half way through a course of 6 sessions at the Skin Clinic (going for the 4th one tomorrow!). They are every 6 weeks. Apparently it only works if the particular hair is at a certain point in its growth cycle, which is why you have to have about 6 sessions to make sure you get all the hairs at their optimum time!

I've been having legs, bikini line and underarms done, and so far it seems to be working really well. From the first appointment I've had hardly any hair growing back, which is fantastic. Time will tell how long it lasts, because they do acknowledge that it's actually permanent hair REDUCTION, not REMOVAL, and you have to go once a year thereafter for top-up sessions.

One of the reasons they say it has worked so well for me is because my hair is thick and dark. Apparently I'm a really good candidate for laser hair removal, as I have dark hair and very pale skin. The way it works is the laser picks up pigmentation (so don't wear black or dark-coloured knickers!), so the better the contrast the better it works. ie. it won't work so well if you're tanned, and it doesn't work on blonde or grey hair.

You have to shave the area you want lasering 4 days before your appointment, so that when the day arrives you have stubble- that's what the laser works best on. A word of advice if you do decide to have it done- it is painful (at least I think it is, some people don't find it too bad), so try to time it when you haven't got your period (though that's a bit difficult when you have to go at 6 week intervals!), and take a couple of painkillers half an hour before your appointment- I keep forgetting to do this...must remember tomorrow!

So far I'm really pleased with how it's going, and I wish I'd had it done years ago. After I'm finished my sessions I'll probably get my facial hair done!

There was a special offer on (which I found out about through MSE)- the Skin Clinic were doing a BOGOF- ie. get one body area done and get another free. Legs count as one area, and bikini line, underarm and tummy all count as another area! The whole thing is costing me about £1000 for 6 sessions, which I think is very reasonable. I always assumed it would cost thousands, which is why I never got it done before. If you only want bikini area and underarm done it would be cheaper I imagine, or you could keep an eye out for their special offers- they were doing 10% off a while back for instance. On the their website http://www.sknclinics.co.uk/ you can download a pdf price-list, and also subscribe to their emails so you can hear about special offers.

4th session went well today- I've got hardly any hair growing in quite a few areas now, so she told me to leave it 7 or 8 weeks before I go back again now, instead of 6!

Has anyone had upper lip done? I was dismayed to hear you would have to shave first I certainly would not fancy that.

I have had my chin and 'beard' area done as I had quite alot of downy hair that made me permanently look 'soft focused'!!! Anyway, I have had 5 sessions at a Sk:n clinic and it is worth every last penny. :money:

When they told me about having to shave I was mortified because it went against everything I had tried for years to avoid but after the first session the hairs were so thin that it didn't bother me. I found that pinching OH's electric razor and wearing heavier foundation completely covered any five o'clock shadow and I have very very dark hair!!!
Don't let the shaving thing put you off, a few days of hiding away is definately worth it for the difference it has made to my life.
God I've made myself sound like some sort of ape-woman!
