Thanks for your responses so far.

Caz, sorry you were disappointed with Epilight.

Satanav10, I need to do that test on the Boots website and see what they say. How much is the cooling gel and what size tub is it?

FelinePrincess, I'll definitely check out the thread you recommended and do my research. Glad the Boots smooth skin system seems to be working for you. What kind of skin/hair have you got? I have white skin, but it's more the Mediterranean type.

I epilate - bikini and legs only

I cant stand the pain of doing the under arms yet the bikni area doesnt bother me

The secret of pain free epilation is clean dry skin, exfoliation ( daily ) and keeping the skin as taught as possible when epilating (which is why I cant manage the under arms, age and rheumatism )

And yes you do need to be a contortionist to do the bikini area:rotfl::rotfl:

I use a facial epilater for getting into the nooks and crannies

I epilate. Your legs do have to get used to it so that might be why yours have raised bumps etc. These should go down.
I don't do my bikini line. Sorry I'd rather have childbirth than do that!
I do my underarms and they don't hurt that much.
I never quite get all the hairs when I epilate as they all seem to grow at different speeds :( but I do prefer it to shaving.
It does hurt a little but the more you do it the better it gets. I tend to use my epilater like a shaver and rather than one long drag up my leg I do lots of little ones. I just find it helps with the discomfort.

By law, any beauty salon, or any establishment, carrying out laser/IPL hair removal should be regulated with the Care Quality Commission - or - if the advert/certificate on the wall is pre April, it will say Healthcare Commission.

This is a requirement for anywhere operating such machines, and it shows that the operator is suitably trained/insured and knows the precautions necessary for such treatments.

    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I have epilated for a few years and bought a cheap panasonic cost £7.50 from the QVC outlet and have never had any problems. I decided to treat myself and purchased the new Braun one that was about £66.00, have done my legs and underarms no problem. My bikini line is another story, I have managed tonight to catch my skin on both legs and have these little blood blisters. Tomorrow we are off for a 3 day break to a hotel and hubby was looking forward to using the pool and all the facilities. There is no way i will be going swimming as it looks as if I have a rash.

I think I may have the same one as you - the silk epil wet & dry?!

The instructions say that if you use a massage sponge afterwards then you won't get in grown hairs.

I epilate my legs. Can't do underarms with it. I can do my bikini line with it but am still not keen on the discomfort.
I've been using it for 3 years and reckon I've saved about £1000 this last 3 years on full leg waxing every 4 weeks.
My epilator cost about £40 from Amazon.
I don't have a problem with ingrown hairs but neither did I with waxing. I've heard that if you're prone to them, epilating can make them worse.
Definitely agree with other posts - your skin must be dry, so not sweaty (sorry) and lotion free when you do it.

Hi Bhz, I have very fair skin and quite dark hair so on paper I am an ideal candidate!

Keep us updated on what you decide to do!

Toothsmith, that's very good to know about the Care Quality Commission. I'll certainly keep that in mind.

    FelinePricess, I'll keep you posted.

I've been epilating for about a year now and have saved a fortune on waxing. It really, really hurt at first, so much so I had tears in my eyes. One year on and it's as painfree as shaving.

I agree about hair growing at different rates so you do need to do it over a week or so to catch everything. I tend to just top up as I need it, buildingmy pain resistance a the same time.

Underarms are new for me. I'm trying to deal with it but it just hurts so damn much. i really wnt to get to the stage I am with my legs!

When I used to do it early on I came out with massive red bumps all over my leg but this is only very slight now. mine never came with wipes or anything, just use it on freshly washed, clean, dry legs with nothing on them. I bought the Philips Satinelle Ice, which was about £60 at the time on offer fom boots. I thought I might as well splash out on a good one considering how much I was going to save over the years.

The one I use is great as it's cordless, rechargeable and comes with a shaving head too.
I'll have some cheese please, bob.
