    Hi Littleangel

I agree with the smaller plate theory - that way it looks like you've got a huge plate load of food and you trick your mind into thinking that way.

I'm not losing weight either, but clothes are starting to be comfortable - it's the only thing that keeps me going as I HATE exercise... :(

I just pop in now and then.... :)

  • Thanks bridiej, I tried that tonight. Fantastic idea!

... unfortunately I think my small-plate technique is somewhat lacking - ended up just having seconds, which I don't think was what I was supposed to do. But I will persevere! Luckily dinner was light on pasta and heavy on vegies so not a disaster...

In the University of Birmingham student newspaper, written by someone who's spent time tidying the diet book shelves in WH Smiths (as part of her job rather than some weird obsessive compulsive thing :)).

Anyway, this person was saying how much people waste on these books which promise to make us happy and thin when even if we were thin we wouldn't necessarily be happy, and we all go on these daft diets which actually make us unhappy because we can't eat our favourite foods so even if we get thin on one (which lots of us don't) we're still miserable partly because of all the food we can't eat and partly because there are other things making us unhappy.

When what we really need is a way of eating rather than a diet!

Actually it was much better put than that and if I can find the article while I'm still semi-conscious I will quote some of the best bits.

Thought I'd just let everyone know about the bargain I got today.
I wanted some excersise equipment for at home, so that I could get fit and speed up the weight loss. Knowing that boots.com has triple points at the moment I checked there. They are currently selling the Carl Lewis sky glider for £49.99 (recommended retail price £89.99) and I can't find it cheaper than £70 anywhere. Obviously I used one of the £5 off vouchers (DAMA88) mentioned elsewhere on this site. As it was over £40, delivery was free aswell. So I paid £45 and got 600 boots points on top :D

I tried to read all the thread but there are soooo many pages. I decided to lose weight 2 weeks ago. I joined the leisure centre and do one hour of training a day. I also have a slimfast (chocolate - as i lurve chocolate) for breakfast and lunch (you're supposed to have one i think but i won't lose weight with just the one as i find weight very hard to lose) and a snack (piece of fruit) twice or three times a day, i drink the chocolate cadbury light hot choc drink (2-3 times a day) and have a full dinner (try to keep it healthyish). I've tried everything in the past. This way i don't get the sweet cravings and i don't have to measure everything (don't have the patience for that). So far i've lost 3 kg (but have plenty to go) and i'm not hungry and i've really noticed my health improving at the gym. Last time i lost 10kg on this diet but then gave up smoking and that was that -- but did manage to give up smoking at least after 20 years). Hope you all have success with your diets!

Far too many posts to read!!!! :D

I have lost 3 stone/4 dress sizes in 4 mths (post babies) just by eating healthy, not piling my plate up with food and doing a little bit of exercise a night at home (as I have a 22 mth old and a 6 mth old) :)

Who needs to spend money to lose weight - it is common sense. ;)
  • Rach1973, can I ask if you were overweight before you had your children? It doesn't sound like it. We all know the theory, but some of us, no millions of us, find it really hard. You may not have meant to be patronising, but I came on here tonight to say that I'd lost 1kg this week. I found the week really tiring and hard, and trying to cook really health meals that everyone will eat, 2 kids and a husband who is a builder and very slim and doesn't understand why we have to change our eating habits. Anyway, I felt quite please with a 1kg loss until I read your post!

oh bj please don't be discouraged, we all have different things to struggle against and your 1kg loss is great, really it is, I know what a nightmare it is trying to cook even unhealthy food which everyone will eat ...

And I read the post more as a comment on the fad diets - Atkins chocolate at £1.27 for a titchy bar, for example! - which some people get caught up in.

And this is just a suggestion, don't know if it will help you at all or not, but if there is resistance in some quarters are there things which can be sprinkled on top to cheer people up? I know my eldest prefers sauces he doesn't like (anything with any taste to it, basically!) if he can put grated cheese on top to 'dilute' it. I either leave this off or have the teensiest bit just to keep the calories down.

All the best and keep it up!

  • Hi everyone! Hope you're all doing well and more importantly, feeling well...

Update on my portion control problem - I've taken Sue's advice on non-measuring measuring and am using a cup for pasta / rice and stuff, which is working a treat. I've also figured that if I change the proportions rather than the portions I can still eat loads, as long as most of it is vegetables (which I love) and I only have a small portion of meat / pasta / potatoes to go with it to feel like I'm not depriving myself.

BJ - welcome! 1kg is a great achievement over a week, but be careful not to overdo it - it is important to eat enough to not feel tired (been there, done that, have the empty family size chocolate bar wrappers to show for it). Slow and steady weight loss is the only long term solution - think life change rather than 'diet'. Getting buy-in from the family is obviously a key issue too - and I'm sure people on this site will have some good advice on that.

I'm still not weighing myself, but had a positive moment that I'd like to share - I finally bought a pair of jeans that were the right size (rather than the size I want to be) - I know, it's a money saving not a money spending website, but they were 50% off - and have had 3 people in the space of a week say that I was looking good and ask if I'd lost weight. I guess they just noticed that I no longer have a roll of fat hanging over the top of the waistband!!! (It's still there, I'm just hiding it in correctly sized clothes!)

Weighed this morning and lost 1 pound so at least moving downwards again :) Will be looking to get to the gym 3 times this week as I took my 2 CeMAP exams on Friday and won't have loads of studying to do in the evenings next week like I have the last few weeks *phew* !

BJ - don't feel down about losing 2 pounds!! Just pick up a bag of sugar next time you are at the supermarket and that is what you lost in weight! Of course put the sugar away again and step away quickly afterwards :D It is a real achievement in what sound like quite tough circumstances.

littleangel - oh that must be the greatest feeling to have those compliments :) Gives you a nice little boost. Of course there is nothing to stop you aiming for the smaller size clothes but think how good it will feel when you buy them and they actually fit properly, which from the sounds of it shouldn't be too far away.

Hope everyone else is doing well and if today wasn't such a good day then there is always tomorrow, Rome wasn't built in a day and I'm sure, like me, the excess weight you want to get rid of didn't suddenly appear overnight from some fat fairy playing a nasty trick :D
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out
