When I did the Inch Loss Plan, I lost a stone in 28 days (I cheated too, had minstrels sometimes ;D) I suppose it's trial and error, you have to try a few different diets until you find one that suits you :-/

  • OK, this site has sorted out my finances (well, nearly - but we're on the way to solvency!). Is it my last hope to shift the weight also? I've done them all, Cambridge diet, MicroDiet, Weight Watchers, Slimming Club, Slimming world ..... I've always lost well to start with, then put it all back and some. Tried the GI diet this time last year and it worked really well, my staying power was my failure, but I think that is the one I'm going to try again. Sensible eating, foods to keep you full up, and no expensive gimmick stuff to buy. quite alot of cooking from scratch though, so have to be organised.

Now, this exercise on prescription, is it only for folks on Income support, or can us just plain skint folk ask too? Also, how do I work out this BMI - mine must be high, I'm a whopping 15 stone and 5ft 4in tall.

    Hi,

The easiest way to work out your BMI is (I find) by using a web site.  The following will easily work it out for you :

    Good luck!
    Wins since 2009 = £17,600

    MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS
  • Thanks Mimi1, but I don't like the results that site gives! Do you know of a better one, giving more favourable answers?!!!

    Have a look here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1261950.stm

You dont have to be on a low income to benefit from this. Anyone whose weight effects their health can use it. I believe (though I might be wrong) that it is council run gyms that do this scheme.

If you are on a low income and qualify for "passport to leisure" you get both discounts. Where I live (Birmingham) the gym is about £4 per session. With my passport I get the gym half price £2. Being on the exercise on prescription scheme I get a booklet of vouchers to use. Each voucher is worth £1. This brings my gym session (which includes use of the pool too) down to £1. ;D I have just gotto renew my passport to take advantage again ::)

Have you thought of just getting a free pedometer and walking more?

It would be less hassle than the gym or swimming unless you would actually enjoy it. :):)

  • Thanks Elona, funny thing is, the whole family went for a long walk today. And you have reminded me that one of the mums at the school has started "power walking". I will report on progress!
  • I am not massively overweight but i definitely look like the baby jesus is overdue. :-[

I live near Lakeside shopping centre and have been walking there, doing window shopping (leave my purse at home) and walking back for 3 evenings a week. It takes me about an hour but is more interesting than just a walk. I have definitely noticed a difference in the tone of my flab. The more i do the easier it gets.

If you find walking alone a little boring maybe a trip to the shops, without your purse! is the thing for you too :D

Good tip LoopyLoo, I am sure there is a group of Walking your Way to Health enthusiasts meeting at a shopping centre somewhere and powering their way around that at least once a week! It is warm, dry and they pick a time when it's not too busy!

I often try when I hit an indoor shopping centre to zoom all the way around it whether I need to or not, before I start actual shopping. Has to be done first, before I've got bags to carry!

I haven't hit my target of only being overweight by Christmas :( but I am halfway there and will do my best to get there by the end of January. It is a slow process! But at least if I get there slowly I am more confident of staying there!
