So after another week of feeling deprived....
I lost 2 lbs and an inch from my waist. Not bad. My little mantra is "Slow and steady, the turtle wins the race." I lost 2lb last week which was ok but not exactly a huge amount. I've now lost 1 stone 1lb in total, but rather depressingly have 5 stones to go. Have decided to set myself a first target of another 2 1/2 stone by my birthday at the end of May. Does that sound like it's achievable? At 17 weeks that'll be an average of 2 lbs a week.0

Got on the scales this morning - sadly no loss - so still at 15st 10lb, was a little naughty this week with the biccies - but have cleaned them out and no more are in the house.

I think it's worth repeating that diet alone isn't the best way to lose weight. Our bodies are programmed to lay down fat in case there's not much to eat through the winter. Now, you would think in that case that if there wasn't so much to eat we would lose the weight, BUT in fact what can happen is that the way our bodies burn food changes so that we store MORE of what's available! :eek:
It's probably why my weight loss is so slow: I mean to walk more but then when I feel completely washed out I just can't do it! Work very tiring and stressful so far this year, and again I know going for a walk is supposed to help, but when I can hardly keep my eyes open it's very hard!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Can I just say I've only read the last few posts (am trawling back through the rest) but a 2LB A WEEK LOSS IS FAB!!! I go to a class and I'm happy with 1-2lbs a week - any more that this is unhealthy (and probably water) and unsustainable.

I lost another half a pound this week, got weighed at a different class due to work committments, I was 230 miles away when my usual class started last night.
I was feeling a bit down as I have been really good this week again, still no alcohol and I have been sticking to the SW program like glue. Today I had to see my Consultant re my FMS and he weighed me, on his scales (proper medical ones) I was about 3lb lighter than yesterday and if anything I had heavier clothes on.
I am feeling the benefit of the weight loss because I am wearing a pair of trousers I couldn't get into a few weeks ago, the scales are not the only way to tell;)0 -
Obesity and Vitamin D
One third of Americans are obese. While much of that epidemic is surely due to playing Nintendo instead of baseball, or the consumption of soft drinks instead of water, does that explain it all?
Is it a coincidence that the twin epidemics of obesity and vitamin D deficiency are occurring together?
Take this short quiz to test your knowledge of the scientific literature concerning vitamin D and obesity. Remember, alternative explanations exist for all of these findings. However, in the end, the answer is really quite simple.
1. Which of the following is true?
A. Weight increases with higher latitude,
B. Weight increases with lower altitude,
C. Weight increases in the winter,

D, all of the above are true. While the seasonal variation in weight is well known, the variations with latitude and altitude are less well known. Different explanations exist for all three associations but vitamin D provides a parsimonious explanation as vitamin D decreases with higher latitude, lower altitude and with the winter.

To my knowledge, only two studies examined actual vitamin D levels in obese subjects and one found dramatically lower levels in obese subjects. A South Carolina study found all of the obese subjects had levels below 2.2 ng/ml while all of the nonobese subjects had levels above 8 ng/ml.

True. Last year, a Norwegian group reported just that. The authors concluded, “placebocontrolled intervention studies with calcium and vitamin D, in which the primary end point is weight change, are warranted.”

Conclusions:
Will taking vitamin D cause you to lose weight? No one knows. Is it a coincidence that the twin epidemics of obesity and vitamin D deficiency are occurring together? Alternative explanations exist for all the above findings. A vitamin D feeding study designed to answer that specific question is needed, using physiological doses of vitamin D (5,000 units) or, alternatively, enough vitamin D to raise 25(OH)D levels into the high normal range. In addition, both the study group and one of the control arms needs to get adequate supplemental calcium, at least 1500 mg/day, to assure calcium cannot explain any findings.
In the meantime, what should you do? If you are overweight, make certain you are not vitamin D deficient. And if you are slim, make certain you are not vitamin D deficient. It is really quite simple.
