Hey Sue, I forgot to say thanks for the colour suggestion. That's something that I think I'd find really interesting as long as they said I could still wear purple ;D Would be really handy as well before I replace my wardrobe, once I'm comfy with my weight! Great suggestion, thanks!
Thoughts are with you for the op, whenever it is. Stuff like that, you need to get your head around it and a log is the ideal place to do that. I guess it is only natural that people kind of tiptoe around you when they know about it, it's like after my dad died people were scared I'd break if they spoke to me but all I wanted was for people to act normally!
I got my step counter from the link someone put on one of the LW threads, yeah it was the one where you only had to pay £3.99 P&P so I think we have the same one. Mine got better with accuracy as I learned to walk with it - sounds funny, but if I walked with my normal 'bounce' it would double count every few steps but I have kind of flattened my walking now so it is quite accurate. I usually knock off 20-30 steps a day for toilet trips as you are right it does count a few extra steps when you pull trousers up & down
I had a McDonalds one which I bought from them (without having the meal) & it is on my shelf abandoned as it was absolutely useless! Although I did buy a multipack of Quavers the other day (before you yell, they are only 5 syns a packet so I have one every so often),which had the Walkers offer of a free step-o-meter which I applied for on their website. It says to wait 28 days for delivery so as I only did that during the week it will be a little while before it gets here. They are giving away 1 million of them and all you need to do is log onto the Walkers website and then see the link for the free pedometer. But as I say, not sure if it is any good as it hasn't arrived yet!
I don't tend to retain fluid around any time of the month so I can't put it down to that, I'm going to stick with the muscle I built up doing all the walking and just hope it falls off again by nest weekend!
Chin up everyone, oh and congrats Furniture Man for your massive achievement *hugs*Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out0 -

Don't know if anyones mentioned this yet, but I'm currently trying the South Beach Diet. Apparently invented by Cardiologist Arthur Agatston. Just bought the book from Asda.
Basically it has three phases. Phase 1 is two weeks of no carbs during which you can lose 8-14 pounds. I've been doing it for a week and have lost 5 pounds so far. My other half has lost 4 pounds.
Phase 2 reintroduces some carbs and is supposed to maintain a steady 1-2 per week weight loss.
Phase 3 is more or less normal eating, but without all the processed foods, e.g. white bread, white rice. So your carbs are mainly wholemeal / wholegrain.
The diet is described as not cutting out carbs ot fats, but eating the right type of carbs and fats. It's certainly working for me.Marillion - A Better Way of Life.0 -
Sadly I had to come back from the hols.
Survived Hurricane Jeanne - just!!! Scary stuff ::) ::)
Put 4 pounds on which isn't too bad considering the amount I ate :o
Reading all the messages it seems like there's been a lot going on.
Shaz & Ally sorry to hear you've not been on top form. Hope you are both feeling better.
Sheel - welcome back from you hols too... Krispy Kremes I had one or two of those as well ;)
Hope everyone else is ok and losing lots of weight :)0 -
Well, my BBC2 Fat Nation step counter arrived today, along with the promised fridge magnet, tape measure and card game. Step counter really looks the part: it has a cover so you can't accidentally reset it. Testing it against the other one I've got.
But I'm fed up. I have this rotten cough so I'm not well enough to go striding across the hills so my step count is right down. (The upside is I don't feel much like eating, even declined some chocolate earlier to day.) But the tape measure they sent suggests I need to lose over a foot off my waist, and I just can't imagine myself that size. It's just too much. Not only can I not imagine myself that size, I'm not sure I want to be that size. Was I ever that size? I suppose I was, BC. Ah well, time will tell ... remember, I'm only aiming for overweight by Christmas, not Twiggy lookalike status!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I've made myself little posters and pinned them on the cupboard and fridge doors.

Maybe I need to find a photo of myself when I was more or less the 'right' size and stick it up next to a photo of me now and decide which I prefer.
I still want to get more active, but every time I get into a good walking routine I seem to get ill or injured! Grrrr.
Going back to bed to sulk.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

OK - I'll share my weight loss strategy which has been very successful and WORKED FOR ME. I'm a 49yo male and went from 93kg 78kg in 6 months and have maintained this for a further 6 months which includes a holiday in the States with terrific food.
Firstly, commit yourself to Atkins for at least 5 days, 10 if you are really going for it. Only do the induction stuff. Cut out caffine entirely for two weeks before - this is tough but you will get through it ... don't do the caffine at the same time as the Atkins - your body and mind won't take it. Get used to drinking large amounts of water. When starting Atkins, plan your week 100% - normal options are boring (only eggs for breakfast) - if you go from day to day you may not hack it. Stick strictly to Atkins. Weigh yourself at the end of the 5-10 days not all the time. You may feel ghastly during this period but persevere - its only a week! After one week your appetite will have been destroyed!!
When you body is fat burning, start some exercise. Gym is recommended because you need to monitor heart rate. Your body burns fat best when doing an exercise for more than 30 mins at 20 above resting heart rate ... this is just uncomfortable - don't think you have to max it out all the time - power walking is best for me. Do some light weights and plenty of stretches to tone up before and after.
When off Atkins, do a bit of meal planing, but the main thing is DO NOT EAT AFTER 6pm. If you do, your body will not have digested the food properly and will turn it to fat when you sleep.
Monitor your weight regularly, once a week at the same time. Go 1kg below the target you want to be. Threaten yoursef with a return to Atkins if you go 3kg above your target weight.
I stress this works for me and you will need some willpower, but it is worth it. Give yourself a makeover when reaching your target weight as a reward ... you will feel good about yourself.0 -

Just been to the doctors yesterday, I have to lose a stone in weight and I'm hopeless when it comes to portion control and watching what I eat.0
