I have been dissatisfied with my local supermarket for some time;tomatoes like bullets that go off in two days, price hikes for no given reason.
I have recently moved to live close to Halifax so I decided to see what the Borough Market Hall had to offer. I pay for a return ticket of £2 from my home on Saturday morning and thoroughly enjoy the shopping experience. I can stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables from the 'fruiterers' and then move to another stall that sells bacon , sausages and farm free range eggs ( half the price of tesco) on to the wet fish shops to stock up on fresh fish, deli stalls for cooked meats and some fantastic butchery stalls for any meat I need and then finally cheese stall for cheeses, cream and farm butter at 86p a pack! My final stop is to the bakers for lovely fresh bread before I go home. I get service which is unheard of in supermarkets and a chat with stall keepers I have got to know and my food is fresher, healthier and half the price!
( no sneeking bars of chocolate or biscuits)Importantly I am promoting the local economy.
My cleaning products I get from the poundshops and they are all makes recognised on the shelves of any supermarket and all cheaper than their value branded products. I managed to get 20 Fairy diswasher tablets for £1-99! In tesco they were £6-00 for 25.
So to anyone who can't buy online please look at your local shops and markets and give them as much business as you can.
  • So long as they're good. Years ago I used a local Greengrocers. My local Butchers might be good.

Does Costco count as avoiding the big supermarkets, or not because it's big?

I'd count it as avoiding supermarkets, myself. I think OP's original idea is about supporting smaller alternatives though.

Gilly well posted :T sams 247 thanks also I shall nose on the sites :T

I think Wychwood Deli are really good - they've got those really green Castelvetrano olives that are gorgeous and you can't find anywhere.

And lots of cheeses and pies, allsorts...

    Hope this is helpful.

Does anyone know of an online site that sells coffee beans and ground coffee that is reasonably priced? It is our one luxury and although I have searched in Halifax,I have not found an independent supplier.
Increasingly I am finding it difficult to source beans even in the dreaded SMs , the price of Italian style coffee is about £3.79 a bag.
