The fly in the ointment is that a huge supermarket can buy in huge amounts of stuff like Kellogg's Cornflakes and get discount so able to drop prices a bit.
  • Yup @Edwardia but..

  • But if we support Independent Businesses and really give them muscle because of excellent products and brilliant Customer Service then at least we support human beings, jobs etc as well as help ourselves.
People have no qualms about supporting Lakeland.
They flock to the store, great Products, super Staff and a Business deserving to go places. Enough humans do it-critical mass and continued critical revolutionary mass then those nasty Supermarkets get one hefty well deserved and overdue kick up the !!!!.

  • @Edwardia There are lots of flies and lots of ointments. But if we are to support employment, but that's another topic.

I've been researching food and the junk that gets into our food is just horrific. As a consequence we're going organic but it's really difficult to find in practice even if supermarkets do sell it in theory.

Now that we're looking for independent shops we're finding that very few exist in our town of 50,000 people. :( We may just have to bypass the local economy altogether and get stuff delivered by courier.

No I wouldn't start a mail order food business that sounds like too much hard work !

Recommend the book The Savvy Shopper by Rose Prince which isn't about saving money but rather about buying great quality and learning about food. At the back it has lists of different online suppliers.
