Hoarding...not just on TV

  • Just to encourage those who are wielding a teaspoon - when I got up early to pull out the chair to vacuum behind and remove the bags of hoard so the TV engineer wouldn't have to kneel in dust, cat hairs and crud ... there was none - finally seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel!

    Thanks twofishes, :)

I was trawling the internet in the early hours as I couldn't sleep, still have this bug, and feel rough and annoyed at the same time as I so want to get on with things, but just feel too weak...anyway, came across a site and a perfume that has the same notes (or similar) to EL, but not tested on animals (I try to use but don't always succeed) and a third of the price, so will give it a try.

Although not physically doing a great deal, I have been thinking and have come up with a plan for the "stuff" that seems to hang about without a home, I'm going to use a small covered basket to put those things in. Plus move my books to the bedroom as I have more shelving there (why didn't I think of that before?).

Going to dose myself up with more yukky medicine and go to bed.

Hope you're feeling better soon Byatt.

This is a small thing but I think it shows something. I've just finished quilting the top of my quilt and am about to start binding. I didn't keep all the trimmings for my scrap bag. It was so tempting but I just kept pieces bigger than 10cm and all the trimmings of the 1970's Sanderson I used as part of the backing. The rest, including some slightly larger pieces of the backing that I know I'll never use again, have gone in the recycling bag.

Very pleased about that. Plus I'm nearing the end of this WIP so it can be used and the room will be a bit tidier as my next project just needs one thread at a time and one pair of scissors so there should be no equipment lying around to attract cluttery friends.

My OH is working from home today.....

He's just told me he's been given another of these huge 30" screen CR TVs, the ones that are the size of a chest of drawers and three times the weight. Now we have one of these already, perfectly good TV but we (that is the kids and I) have been hoping it will go Pzzzt very soon so we can get a flat screen TV. I don't like throwing out perfectly good working equipment and most TV programs are dross anyway but I hate not being able to get behind the TV for a dust once a year. However with the arrival of TV Brick #2...well, why?

He explained he will try both and see which one has the better picture.

Me: So the reject will go to the CS?

Err, no, apparently, we'll keep it as a spare.

    Me: Where exactly?

    Him: Attic?

Me: Don't be silly, these things weigh several hundredweight. The ladder or you or both will collapse.

    Him: Somewhere then.

Me: Somewhere down here? As in where?

Him: I don't care, just somewhere.

Me: (getting and feeling a bit shrill.) I DON'T WANT IT SOMEWHERE, I want it out of here. One is already one too many.

Him: Well, you do what you like with it then.

Me: Okay, it doesn't come into the house in the first place then. (Because if it does I can't even begin to think of carrying it down a massive flight of stairs, it will be here forever.)

Him: Oh there's ungrateful, it will save us buying a new one eventually.

Me: I don't want a new one of that size, I don't even want an old one.

Him: It's a waste of money to buy things we can get for free. (He has a point...if we didn't not already have four other TVs in the house, all big and lumpy ones though not as big and lumpy as the lounge one.)

    Me : I don't want it here.

Him: Oh you'll get used to it....

I am thinking of sticking a screwdriver into either the current TV or Hubby atm. Care to vote on this?

    Valk,

We recently inherited a lovely small flat screen to go in the corner where hand me down huge and ugly tv like you describe was.

    You know what,

It's no better IMO for the 'look' of the room. I have NEVER bought a tv, and tbh they hold little value for me (even though I watch tv and listen to the radio through digi box I would rather not see the ugly things). But I am with your husband that a free tv is better than a bout flat screen. bUT, if there are more tvs than rooms you want a tv in then I would take the least favourite to a charity shop where the sell electricals (here that is red cross) or offer it on freecycle or similar.

Which is heavier to bury under the patio? :rotfl:

Carpet man has been here 2 hours - he won't stop talking! I know all about his daughters, their partners, his holidays and his car. He has already found out where I went on holiday, what I and my OH do for a living and where the kids go to school. He is a nice old soul but I wish he'd get on cos I need a wee and I can't get past him cos he is on the stairs! :rotfl:

I'm also supposed to be working and I can't get a thing done
I wanna be in the room where it happens

If a flatscreen tv is what you and other members of the family want then I don't think it is a waste of money. For me there are some things that are not just about the thing, if a flatscreen tv would be beneficial beyond just watching tv then no amount of free big tvs would be what you want.

My thing is being able to buy a magazine, yes they're a waste of money, yes I could look at virtually the same content online or in a book from the library but being able to have a current magazine (even if I then choose not to buy) is a huge psychological boost. It means I have time to sit down and relax and a little bit of wiggle room in the budget to spend on things other than necessities.

Sometimes things are more than what they are.

Just to clarify, I don't mind the current one being there that much, I just don't want another huge bulky object sitting in the hall or something for the next X years just in case we need it. There is no other spot in the house that it would be useful atm. In two or five years when the current TV dies flatscreens will be even cheaper I would expect. Or I could nip down to the local CS (it takes electricals) and get another for £25. Bringing a large object that's not likely to be very useful anytime soon into the house is on the hoarding spectrum, surely?

Alec, while I agree, because it's how I felt, what I am tying to say is that when the flat screen came......it's just as ugly, it takes up less room on the same table, ( our flat screen is smaller screen that the other one too) but its still 'just' an ugly tv.

I am not suggesting Valk scot let's her husband fill the house with old tvs, but also to not run away with the idea that a flat screen solves all ills.

I would say that symbolism of 'not just a tv' is what gets a lot of non oldstylers into trouble financially.
