My step daughter hired a skip and it cost her £140

    I hope that helps

I have problems walking very far and car parking at the local hospital is very difficult. I'll try the other charity shop in a couple of days.

I've still got loads of stuff to get rid of so two bags of books in the car boot isn't going to lose me any sleep.

Thanks for the suggestions - you lot are great x
Stick 'em on freecycle with the caveat that they ALL go as ONE LOT

if the aim is to get rid then job done - it doesn't matter where they go.

I've already put them on Freecycle and nobody is interested (and I belong to a large group)

I also advertised cardboard boxes and a butane gas container and they went really quickly but not the books

Maybe nobody is interested in my random collection LOL

Would it be cheaper to hire 'man with a van' to take it all to the local dump?

Not tried a junk mail sign, but this one worked wonders with incessant calls at the door:

    Thank you
    BUT
    NO THANK YOU

    NO
    · Sales people/cold callers
    · Charity fund raisers
    · Evangelists
    · Utility or phone companies

We NEVER buy at the door or sign DDM’s, or switch utilities.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

:) I think the tip would treat the man with the van as Trade Waste. Pal of mine was clearing out domestic carp and as her household had a small hatchback and a Transit van, she naturally took the van to the tip. They wouldn't let her off-load, insisting that knackered paddling pools (2) and various other bits of broken domestic paraphenalia were "trade waste" despite her van being lettered for a business which clearly had nothing whatsoever do do with clearing domestic carp.

I've often struggled with similar issues; can you saw the wooden stuff down to the point where it could fit into a car (calling in a favour if you're car-less) or try offering it on Freecycle. If some of it is proper wood, as opposed to particle board, maybe someone would want it as firewood?

PS. I think I shall design myself a version of your sign as cold-callers exp charity chuggers are a pest around here.

There's a sign on this board you can print out that tells callers they are breaking the law if they door knock - doesn't solve leaflets though

I tried freecycling dismantled solid wooden furniture as wood for burning - clearly said it was dismantled furniture - man came and said he couldn't take it ... because it had been used in furniture so would have been treated!

Tip will treat man with van as "trade"

At least a skip means it gets recycled - I also got a reasonable quote from a firm, think they were called Any Old Junk? who charge by the yard to take away

The end is in sight! I need to tidy up and clean, but a lot of junk has either gone or is on its way. I have too many hobbies to have a minimalist house but I might be able to have a tidy-ish one!

Out to the Dogs' Home today:
    a dozen books
    10 soft toys
    6 items of clothing
    3 ornaments
7 random items I no longer want

I am throwing out a very knackered plant from the bathroom and will put the weeping fig on freecycle (it was given to me by someone I'd rather forget about but is too good to bin). I have some corner shelves in the bathroom (one of those wrought iron type sets) which will come downstairs to put stuff on that I use regularly, thus hopefully freeing the table and sideboard of stuff that makes them look cluttered.

I also have a box of random bits which are not good enough to give away so they will be going in the bin when I empty the bins later.

It feels so good to be getting rid of this 'stuff'!

Oh - and I didn't buy any more tat at the dog show .... just sausage muffins as a treat for the dogs and they have already been decluttered by my enthusiastic mutts :rotfl:.

I agree with other posters about the junk leaflets, they are a right pain.

You just reminded me that the Dogs Trust take books and sell them. Thanks.

Also I just got an email from a Freegle lady saying she would like my books - so with any luck they'll be gone soon.

Has anybody any ideas of what to do with half a dozen bottles of sparkling wine that's gone flat?

Pour it down the sink and throw the bottles in the recycling. That's what I'd do anyway.

Okay just finished reading this from the start (blimey you lot can chat!), and some of this really resonates. 7 years ago my sister died (from alcoholism) and my parents, Dr Dragon and myself got to clear the house (well parents and Dr Dragon did, I was back at my parents sorting paperwork out and making phonecalls - crutches and clearing .. not a good combo!), they had to get rid of over 100 empty brandy bottles and the paperwork :eek::eek::eek::eek:, my parents have a dining room table that can seat 12 and it was COVERED in paper a foot high and as I started sorting more was arriving (it got to the stage when Dr Dragon and myself were sat in their lounge [20 ft long] sorting things into piles such as bank statements, pay slips etc and then I got to shred them! She had kept everything from her first Saturday job when she was 14 and she died at 44 :o)

So I am gradually sorting stuff and even getting Dr Dragon on board, my downfall are books and DVDs (being disabled I watch DVDs a LOT during the day and I luuuuuurve books!) I am wondering about getting a Kindle and getting rid of a load of books, keeping a FEW favourites and those that I can't get on Kindle - what do people think?
