have blitzed part of our room today - I was looking for DD1's passport:o, which I have now located.

2 full binbags of gibble evicted - old knickers, bras that no longer fit DD2, old toiletries, make up that was manky, broken hairbrushes........ you get the drift...

One box file is labelled ( by oH) as misc..... what it contains are a load of pullouts from the Saturday Guardian.....

Several are song lyrics by noteable artists..... I can cope with Bruce springsteen ( but it will be recycled - next week is green bin collection) as OH quite likes the boss - but why did he keep the lyrics of Morrissey? HE CAN'T STAND MORRISSEY!!!!!!

I would love to help Ginger taking stuff to the local tip as well.

Our local council will take four items away for £12 - does your local council do a similar scheme Ginger?

I forgot about the council as I was thinking about the weekend (council only works 9-5/M-F) and the palaver I have to go through at work to get time off.

I'll ring the council tomorrow and see

EDIT :  OMG  Check the prices!!!
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Had to lurk on the thread via the playstation 3 (with DH's help as it's beyond me). We now have a new laptop, which I am pleased about (lovely keyboard) but also very cross about because we haven't budgeted for it. I blame a very young DD for the other one breaking as we hadn't had it that long. Mind you, it was on MSE practically 24/7 so perhaps it died out of guilt!

Had a very productive declutter now I am doing a bit then clearing it completely out of the house before starting on the next bit. Toys were sorted so 1 big box of broken tat went, 5 binbags of soft toys to the charity shop, 1 big sewn together toy to recycling centre (wouldn't surprise me if they adopt it as a mascot to traumatise more kids), 1 bag stuff to a friend, plus the usual recycling rubbish.

In came 1 new laptop, 4 plastic boxes for organisation - don't let Jojo tell me off, lol. And some plants. I used to love plants and then had a few token ones, but now we're less cluttered, our living room has gone green and it is very peaceful and soothing. We've also rearranged, and just as we had run out of motivation yesterday, a pal phoned wanting to visit later in the day. There was just enough time for a last burst of activity before she arrived.

Day to day tidying is a lot quicker now for the areas that have been decluttered.

There is still a lot to do but now at a stage that bits can be tackled at a time. Am really pleased at the sheer amount of stuff that has gone.

Forgot to say that I got a Kindle last Christmas.

When I read something on it, I do enjoy the reading so the actual words are every bit as good when I'm lost in the story. However, I get a lot of pleasure from seeing books on the bookcases and half-open books on the table. I could happily live without the Kindle. (I tend to read the books that you buy, rather than free ones, and it isn't cheaper for me at the moment).

I wouldn't get rid of all my books (and I wouldn't dare TOUCH Dr Dragon's books :rotfl:), for instance cookery books, I wouldn't have them on a kindle and some books I like to read in dead tree variety! But from the point of view of space then getting rid of 80% of my fiction books onto something the size of an open wallet .....:o

:o I need a skip. :o

The binmen refused to take one of the bins because it was too heavy and I've also taken apart a wobbly set of shelves and a manky old wardrobe. The pieces are too big to fit in the bin with all the bin bags.

If I just pile up everything in the front room and feed them out 'bag by piece' it'll take weeks.

I need to get on to a skip hire/waste management firm to see about hiring the smallest skip they have - I can find websites but they're all coy about prices....

I'll call them tomorrow about getting a skip next Saturday. :o

I moved the other month and had loads to get rid off (family used to take the mic as my house was full). Everything that was resellable/reusable got bagged up and offered of freecycle as a carboot lot - I filled a mans mini bus twice :o (was being used for a school summer fair)

Then all the carp went in black bags and a man and a van I found on facebook filled his transit van for £60 (He had a waste license)

It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders even though I shudder to think of how much money I had wasted on it all

If you google for skips in your area there should be a few that come up, and they tell you the sizes aswell

Re: getting rid of things. Do any of your local councils do special uplifts? Up here you just put the stuff outside and they pick it up :) we get 4 free uplifts a year, or no limit if in a tenement.

No idea if this is any use for England so feel free to ignore :)

Wolverhampton don't.

Hammersmith and Fulham, where I used to live did.

Every fourth Saturday, the council would drop a ginormous skip along our road and pick it up later in the day.

It was abused by tradesmen and it stopped :(

That's annoying :( I do think the flats are easier to prevent abuse, they only pick up the items/rough number of bags listed in the request on private property and sling it straight in their pickup n carry on. Would need to be a very cunning tradesman to get the timing right! Sorry this isn't really any help.

:)

If it means you have got rid of junk in order to keep things that have a use and purpose clean, safe and easy to get to, there's nothing wrong with storage in itself. It's only when it's inappropriately used that it causes difficulties for people, after all.
