    Wow!

So instead of being proud that she saved so very hard for a "big" birthday milestone, you got all haughty about "where is yours?"

So then when she took you out to buy a few treats you were mentally turning your nose up at it being Primark and then felt miffed that she gave you a card from a "job lot". Surely again you should of felt some pride in the fact that she worked hard to save for her boyfriend and brought a refurbished ( quite a sensible choice rather then get new if funds are tight) ipad and was still sensible with her money by being able to treat you on a budget and making use of birthday cards in a way that most MSE'ers would be happy with!

My mum has always been so grateful for whatever we manage, some years its been "better" presents then others but whatever its been she has always been over the moon. Maybe I am just lucky!

I agree. My eldest spent all the money she had (not much) the Xmas before last on her girlfriend, I got nowt. (I did get something from the gf though :)). Can't say I thought much about it, they have very little money and, imo, they have better things to spend it on than presents for me.

If I was the OP I'd have been happy wth just a card.
My ex hubby never once bought me a card or present for any occasion. The most upsetting though was my first mother's day when I had bought lovely gifts and cards for both our mums.
We went to his mum's for dinner and she asked what I had got for mother's day then laughed when I told her "nothing"
Ex replied "well you're not my mum are you?" It was another few years before I got my first mother's day card made at school by my son and I still have it.

I'm with you, Meritaten, on OP.

A bunch of flowers on your birthday and some for his mum's grave would have been better.

After all, it wasn't a special day for her, was it?

She'd been saving hard for a present for her boyfriend. That is a lovely thing to do, especially at the age of 18, where she could have spent it on herself or pished it up the wall.

An 18th is a big deal, and it's her boyfriend, so of course his birthday was going to take a lot more thought and expense than yours.

She may not even remember the boyfriend's name in twelve months but her Mum will still be there for her! I always think about the old saying "you never miss your Mother till she's gone".....mind you, I've got a wonderful Mum (and I hope I am one myself).
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
