Neighbours House Covered in Tat!

Hi All,

Not quite sure where I should be posting this?

I am posting this on behalf of my friend who has a neighbour thatis slowly but surely covering the front of his rented house in tat/clutter or what ever else you want to call it. It started when he moved in and put 2 fish tanks in the front garden (with fish in). We didn't mind that but he has now
put up some sort of picture frames with photos in. These are actually hanging on the front external wall of the house and there's quite a few of them. The man that lives there doesn't seem to see the problem but it is starting to make the place look like a right eye-sore. It sounds laughable but it's really quite hideous and I don't really know who to contact. Do you think if she justs rings the council they will be able to tell him to take it all down?

Thanks

    Maybe he thinks it's pretty?

Actually, I'd be interested in any advice coming from this as our neighbours have nailed a bunch of trellises to the top of the fence my OH put up, stopping us capping the fence posts, and also a random piece of wood further down the fence. After a bit of peeking I realised the wood is decorated with kiddy-painting (assume it's the grandkids) and it all looks OK from their side but our side looks like a redneck house!! Argh!!

It's a bit of a delicate situation. The council will balance the right of someone to enjoy their own property, including hanging pictures on the wall if that's what they want with any environmental concern that might arise due to using the front garden as a fly-tip.

AFAIK, there's not actually any law against making the place look untidy even if the neighbours do think it's reducing the value of their own houses.

TBH, he just sounds eccentric and fish tanks and pictures sound quite sweet really. How about a bit of neighbourly tolerance?

I think with the OP I'd be more concerned if the clutter was taking over.

Telephone the landlord and tell them what's going on and inform them that if it continues you will begin legal action, which he or she will have to declare when he comes to sell the property at a later date. The batshit tenant will be out of their swiftly.

I dont think there is very much your friend can do about it. Although not to your taste, or mine to be honest, what he is putting outside the house is not offensive in any way or causing any environmental damage. He sounds a bit eccentirc and odd but it could be far worse.

It wouldn't bother me, as long as it wasn't just junk in your next-door garden. Perhaps he thinks he is being 'artistic'?

That would be a major over reaction and a total waste of time and money. Seriously you would begin legal action because someone puts a fish tank in a garden and hangs a few pictures on a wall. The property owner would have to declare this when they came to sell and you would take it this far if they didn't comply to your demands. Over something so totally trivial.

Wow I am amazed by your repsonse. So much for live and let live and showing some tolerance.

And what 'legal action' is this then? Evoke the law that says 'You can not keep a fish tank in your garden'? Or perhaps the one that says 'You are forbidden from putting pictures on your external walls'?

Perhaps the house is a bit of an eyesore. But the last time I looked the law didn't require us all to keep our houses tidy like some bastion of suburban perfection just so as to keep the neighbours happy.

You misunderstand - whatever the legal action is doesn't matter - the house's owner will have to notify all future potential buyers that there has been a dispute with a neighbour (something which all landlords wish to avoid) - that is the power play here, not the potential legal implications.
