If they're the mini naans I use them as sandwiches! Adds a bit of flavour to a boring sarnie!0 -
Can`t believe how little we have spent so far this month!! I an trying to empty freezer, and cupboards a little bare!!
Had leftover beef snd roasts from xmas last night was lovely!
Next week is half term and I am working 2 days so not sure how that will pan out.
Made too much pancake mix last night so toad in the whole for tea!!
No one seems to have noticed much yet apart from cupboards a bit bare, going to pay what I have saved over last two weeks off mortgage.
Just woundering if I should add `school dinner money` to my pot of grocery spend next week?
Still working well having a shopping purse, best thing I ever did!!0 -
Just more milk (£1.25) today, honestly, i need a cow in the back yard with the amount that DD goes through
So just under £14 so far

Hi there M, well done on your decision to take your kitchen back to basics :T I make homemade custard but the rest of the household don't know that as I cheat and add a few drops of food colouring :rotfl: Just use cornflour in the exact same way you would if you were using custard powder, but add in some vanilla essence and a few drops of yellow food colouring and that way nobody will know the difference. We are all big fans of milk pudding here, so I tend to use powdered milk most of the time, otherwise I'd need a cow in the garden to keep up with milk consumption! Anyway, I just did a main shop at the weekend, so have the prices to hand, although I do end up paying well over the odds for many items because of my location and lack of supermarkets.
250g cornflour - 49p
Vanilla essence - £1.23
Yellow colour - 39p
The colour and vanilla essence will last ages, and the cornflour is half the price of custard powder, so does save a few pence every week especially if, like this household, you have custard a couple of times a week. It's also handy for all your hm cheese sauce, custard cakes, trifle custard etc. I should also add that I cook my custard in the microwave as it is so much quicker and saves using the cooker.
Thankyou nykmedia,
I will be using the last of the custard powder this week some time so will try the cornflour recipe soon - thankyou!! Good idea about the colouring although mine are too little to know any different!#118 DFW Debt freely Christmas 2012 Challenge0 -
Hi guys
Have spent £38.10 so far, bit gutted as it's only the 6th, (tho it did include some cleaning products.) however i do now have enough meals to last til the end of the month, have written down every meal i am having for the rest of the month on my calendar, so it reminds me to get them out of the freezer and to make me stick to it.
Should only need to buy bit of fresh veg and juice, so fingers crossed minimal grocery spends in the next 23 days. Next challenge to stay away from the shops!!!
Hope everyone is well.

Evening all
got some updating to do
picked up some pork earlier today -1.5 kilo for €2.81 -and that wasn't even whoopsed :j ..its "on the bone" but there is very little bone-so that has been in the slow cooker all day, im going to strip it off in a moment -using some to have a go at making "gyros", some i will marinade and use in the pittas/tortillas and the bits n bobs will make another big batch of goulash soup for hubbies flasks
They were also doing 3 huge red peppers for 99c..so i got the last 2 packs...we love them on salads and in tortillas etc, oh and i also got a frozen duck for €6 -about £4.50 for 2 kilo :T so im doing crispy duck and HM pancakes at the weekend -the rest will be frozen for another time -much cheaper and tastier than a takeaway -and think i will make so special fried rice to go with it (to use up some odds n sods in the fridge:p )
The Turkey meatballs were a hit last night -so much so that hubby requested the rest for dinner tonight-have to say they were stunning... with caramalised onions a splodge of sour cream and wrapped in HM tortillas and served with salad:T
we are at the end of our 2nd week, and even though i have spent a fair bit -im not stressing as soooooo much of what i have will take us into the following months (still have a full case of milk in the car:p ), guess its a case of "spending to save"... i ran the freezer down in January and now it is packed again :j
right off to update my signature

Hi all
Just a quick update on last 2 meals - HM Bean & Lentil loaf turned out pretty good - so good that despite it being twice the size of the ready-meal one; it was all eaten at one sitting - even the bit left over that was going to be DH's lunch. Only criticism from myself that it needs less water, it was not firm enough really! Mental note to self - next time, make it (them?) during the day so I can freeze one & re-heat the other, before they see it.
Moroccan chicken & cous cous good but see above comments - massive pot full all eaten in ONE sitting!! Only spend today, 99p for butternut squash for MC recipe.
Good luck all, inspiration from eveyone & I am learning a lot. PS Is it possible to make your own yoghurt using Easiyo equipment - without buying their sachets?New start JAN15 - NOT BUYING IT 2015 .
