    Hi there miecherox

You could pour the smoothie into ice lolly moulds if you have some....

    Hm oxtail soup yumyum
brilliant just sent DH into the cupboard of no return to get the lolly moulds - I think they're in there anyway!!

Do you have a recipe for your oxtail soup? And is it possible to make it into a meal for two little ones ie - not too runny?

    I've been Money Tipped!
First food spend of the month today was on the Abel and cole order, 1 small fruit and veg box, 6 fr eggs, 1 pot natural soya yogurt and 1 pack organic butter came to £13.84.

I still have plenty left in stores so not going to worry yet. On Monday I made a huge crockpot full of Pea and Ham soup from Elonas's recipe (all the ingredients in freezer or larder) and OH loves it, He will have the last of it for tomorrows lunch. I am going to have a go at lentil dhal in the slow cooker tomorrow ready for when I come in cold from work.

£106.16 left for the rest of the month.

OH went to the shop on sunday to get some bread, fruit and veg etc, he spent 10.55 so not too bad considering i had not given him a list. He has just got home from work with 4pts of FF milk for 20p, and some choc doughnuts and a box of crusty rolls so they have gone in the freezer for when we have soups. Didn't all fit so will have to have a few with tea tonight, gonna do a salad now to try and use up some of the salad I have before it goes off. Gonna have to water down some milk for oh cos running low on SS but can't complain for 20p. We appear to have built up an abundance of nappies so shouldn't need these till mid march, have 3 packs of babydry and 2 boxes of easy up pants. I have oreder 10 pounds of sainsbury vouchers from a survey site but unless they have a date to use by am gonna try not to use these, I think I should be able to do it only 3 weeks to go.
  • I got a phone call this morning from a recruitment office I have just signed up to to ask me to come in for a "wee chat". Forty-five mins later and I am likely to be starting work on Monday!
I am not really sure if I want to take the job - it's probably boring, definately badly paid and I am waiting to hear from my childminder if she can take DS2 at such short notice. (edited to say: another recruitment agent has just phoned, interview tomorrow, just to stir things up a bit)
End result- I fumbled around in Morrisons in a dazed state looking for bargains and offers, totally forgot to buy bread and dishwasher tabs, and didn't even visit Lidl or Aldi as I would when in the area  . Spent £5.82 on bogofs so not too bad really, but now we have jam and naans and frozen veg but no bloomin' bread for tomorrow's packed lunches! will have to ask OH to bring some home (and see what else he buys too...)

    Still on target though:j :j

Having chicken curry, rice and naan for tea tonight so better take the chicken out of the freezer. Have a good day folks!

What I need now is a recipe for home made custard if anybody knows one?
    Thanks in advance

    M x

Hi there M, well done on your decision to take your kitchen back to basics :T I make homemade custard but the rest of the household don't know that as I cheat and add a few drops of food colouring :rotfl: Just use cornflour in the exact same way you would if you were using custard powder, but add in some vanilla essence and a few drops of yellow food colouring and that way nobody will know the difference. We are all big fans of milk pudding here, so I tend to use powdered milk most of the time, otherwise I'd need a cow in the garden to keep up with milk consumption! Anyway, I just did a main shop at the weekend, so have the prices to hand, although I do end up paying well over the odds for many items because of my location and lack of supermarkets.

    250g cornflour - 49p
    Vanilla essence - £1.23
    Yellow colour - 39p

The colour and vanilla essence will last ages, and the cornflour is half the price of custard powder, so does save a few pence every week especially if, like this household, you have custard a couple of times a week. It's also handy for all your hm cheese sauce, custard cakes, trifle custard etc. I should also add that I cook my custard in the microwave as it is so much quicker and saves using the cooker. :D

Good luck with the new jobs MrsBartolozzi! :)

Hi all. Im really struggling this month and Im not sure why. I found last month quite easy, only had to restrain myself in the last few days.
But then because the 1st of this month was a Friday I did a weekly shop, then realised yesterday that the need for cat litter, cat food and dishwasher stuff, not to mention, bread, milk, eggs, raisins (Ive been baking this week) would not wait til Friday.
So another £12 yesterday as I also got a few bargains like f&v at 90% discount and bread at 75% discount. So Ive spent over £50 already which is about 12 days worth of budget in just 6 days.

I wouldnt mind but having meal planned to accomodate whats in the freezer I dont need to buy any meat for the first fortnight of Feb, but still I am over budget. So all I have bought foodwise is fresh stuff, (milk, bread, fruit, veg, cheese) and store cupboard stuff like cereals, tins etc. I guess I will have to stretch out a bit further and make sure my Friday shop this week is very minimal.

Sorry for that whinge, I guess the novelty has worn off as this is my second month and the reality of how tough it is has kicked in.

I am so determined to succeed, but I may change the boundaries and do 4 weekly challenges rather than monthly as theres no way I can afford 5 weekly shops in a 29 day budget (damn 5 Friday month).

Will hae a read back now and see how you're all getting on.

I have just adapted the figures in my spreadsheet to make my challenge 4 weekly (or 5 weekly as appropriate) as its more reflective of the way I spend (i.e. weekly shops not monthly shops). I have worked out my targets all the way through to July, gradually reducing my spend to £100 per 4 weeks, which is a figure Im happy with.
  • I got some cod out of the freezer today and doing it in the oven with tomatoes and onions, olive oil and lemon juice. Boulangere potatoes and peas.

Another NSD for me today (yay!) despite going to Sainsbury's (just had a look in the reduced section...not tempted) and going to the wool shop which always makes me spend but I resisted, very pleased with oneself!
