I spent £7.79 today in M, mainly on milk (and that's with me watering it down) some fairy cake cases and cough medicine. I had an hour to pass and would normally have left with at least £20 worth of stuff, so I was quite pleased. I said to my 4yr old to question everything I picked up (he loved it!)
Our fish van comes round tommorrow, but I'm not getting anything this week as he's getting very expensive. We also have an organic veg box delivered on a Wed and it's £8 and well worth it.
Lil-me please add me in for £250, will update my sig later.Grippy is my middle name!0 -

Hi all, bit of advise needed here.
Me and OH have been chatting about replacing our microwave. I have mentioned to him that I would like to get a slow cooker and breadmaker but can't justify it cause my kitchen is not very big and if I bought them I would like these 2 items on the worktop.
I have suggested to OH that if we just got rid of the microwave there would be enough room on worktop for a small/ compact bread maker and slow cooker.
My cooker is electric and I'm on economy 7 tariff.
Was thinking that I could used Breadmaker during night..save abit of money on grocery aswell as electric.
Not sure if OH could cope without microwave:D
Can anyone think of pro's and cons to this?
Hi Carolt2,
I too have a tiny kitchen but could never bring myself to get rid of the microwave, it`s too invaluable to us as we eat at different times a lot and it gets used for reheating.
We are on economy7 for the leccy too and our breadmaker and slowcooker both go on at night to save money.
I have the same MR 6.5 litre one that rosieben has and it does take up a lot of worktop space but it`s used an awful lot, when it`s empty you could double it up as a breadbin for your breadmaker bread perhaps.
I had to swap things around to fit them in and my electric kettle now lives on top of the microwave, the breadmaker and coffee maker live on the other tiny worktop and the slowcooker sits on top of my fridgewhen its empty , this leaves me a tiny bit of worktop free which is about 3 feet long to work in, it`s a squeeze but i can just about manage.

Hi lil_me
Could you please add me to the list for £200 ??? - that's for me & DH + DD17 - (3 adults); 2 big dogs & 2 cats. Finally mananged to force myself to menu plan - if only for one week - so am very proud of myself! Then discovered that I had planned a stir fry with no beansprouts. Before the GC I would have rushed to the supermarket for the essential b/s & probably spent another £20 whilst there. Now after the GC, I made do with the veg I had in & used lots of crunchy stir-fried white cabbage (bought several from MrA when priced at 5p each!) in place of the dratted b/s. Mixed with the other veg I had it was fine....who said necessity was the mother of invention? For afters made some HM hobnobs, have had to put them away in a sealed box to avoid eating the lot!! BTW I also can eat the mixture in its raw state quite happily (hangs head in shame)...........New start JAN15 - NOT BUYING IT 2015 . Hi everyone, I finally went to the butchers yesterday to see what the meat was like, I only bought mince, but it was lovely. So did some cooking for the freezer and made, 5 x bolognese for the 3 of us (500g mince) and a veggie chilli with lentils and beans, 6 portions for the freezer, I will have that on a jacket potato for lunch. So in total I spent £4.18 on 1kg of beef mince, does anyone know if that is good value?Feb 2008 Grocery Challenge £160, Spent £163.48

I usually buy a 500g (could be 450g though) pack of organic mince from Morrison's for £1.99. So that's roughly double what you paid. Well done on getting so many meals out of so little meat. I have to use 2kg to get what you have produced. I do the same spag bol and chilli and batch freeze like you. Maybe I should start looking at portion size.

This thread moves far too fast for me - I just can't keep up with it!
I made several loaves of bread last week, on Friday evening whilst cooking the dinner (roast chicken) I decided to make raisin bread. Found I didn't have any raisins or white bread flour left...so brown sultana bread it was!
And it was delicious!
I used to chicken carcass and leftover chicken to make chicken, shitake mushroom and spinach soup on Saturday from The Soup kitchen cookcook.
Owing to a complete absence of shitake mushrooms, this became chicken, dried porcini and spinach soup.
Glad to see evreyone's still doing so well.Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0 -

I'd find it hard to do without the micro as well. Perfect for making porridge in the morning, heating beans, reheating defrosted hm meals, defrosting frozen meals you forget to leave outdefrosting bread or dough etc etc. I'd say first of all think carefully about the size of slowcooker you get - if there are only 2of you go for a small one, I got the 6.5l as a gift and never use it because it's about five days meals for two of us
I'm all for cooking and freezing but that's ridiculous.
The other thing is that again since there are only two of us I tend to mostly use the breadmaker at weekends and then freeze some of the bread for during the week - I like italian bread and it's a bit of a palaver being there to take the dough out, let it prove and get it cooked. So it lives in the cupboard for most of the week. Just saying think about how/when you'll use it and whether you have cupboard space for it. To me it's not a big deal getting it out when I need it since I make max 4 loaves a week anyway...0
